Since my contact wheel is wearing out , I would like everyones thoughts and opinions on a smooth wheel vs. a serrated wheel .
Thanks for your thoughts
Jack

I use a smooth contact wheel.
The grooved wheel is better for roughing.
It depends on your application.
on a side note...
At my last job I was able to regrind the OD of my contact wheel on a lath using a dumore post grinder.
Grinding yours true would depend on how bad it was.

The general rule is that a serrated wheel will grind more aggressively, and a smooth wheel will give a smoother finish.

I certainly do feel the serrated wheel can grind more aggressively, but I can also get a real smooth finish with it. :)

The serrated wheels are also supposed to track better. I think this is less of a problem with today's high-quality abrasives and grinders. I don't have any finish problems on a serrated wheel either, but I will say that I prefer a smooth wheel in the large wheels 12+. I've used 12" smooth side by side with serrated (the 14" I've only used smooth), I just prefer the smooth wheel on large wheels. 4" - 8" I like better serrated, have also used them both ways. 10" I've only used smooth, but I don't really think I'd have a preference.

also serrated wheels are supposed to make your belts stay cooler , which may make a different if you grind a lot after HT.

I think I've got 3 serrated and 4 smooth and except for 1 10" serrated, 95%
of everything I do is on smooth wheels.
