I'd like to smooth out the texture on the G10 handles on some of my folders. What type of sandpaper (wet/dry, wood/metal) and what grit would you recommend? Any tips? Things to look out for / be careful of? Recommended method (by hand, with sanding block)?

Thanks,

Not sure what grit you should use, but I would definitely wear some sort of respirator, because G10 dust is very harmful to the lungs.

It will burn your eyes as well. Even in a well ventilated room. The stuff is nasty. Be careful! I started with 120g, 220 and stopped at 4-500 then took it to the buffing wheels. That was all I could stand. I had headaches the rest of the day. I still have a 12"X12" sheet of it but don't care to work it. DM

I've heard that sanding G10 while it's wet will greatly cut down in the dust exposure. I haven't tried it myself, however.

Thanks guys. I'd hear the same thing about sanding it wet. I was thinking of using wet/dry and actually holding the scales under water. Should make the dust problem almost non-extant.

Indeed, wet sanding reduces dust inhalation risk. However, if you are doing enough of it (more than just smoothing a small rough spot) you will be essentially working up a slurry of glass fiber. It can and will irritate your skin if you deal with enough of it.

Rinse everything frequently.
