I used to have a half dozen or so Emersons at any given time. I was broke for a few years, so the nicer knives had to go. I'm at a point now where I can afford nice things again, and got my first Emerson in years: an A-100.

I love everything about this knife, but the scales are like sandpaper. I'm afraid this is going to tear my pants up. What can I do to smooth the scales out a bit, without ruining the knife?

The answer is in your statement, Matthew. Use a bit of sandpaper to smooth the G-10, after removing the clip. Best done outside so you don't breath the dust.

You definitely don't want to end up breathing any of the G10 dust. I'd suggest outside like A.P.F. said and wearing a mask like the kind you get at Lowe's or home Depot, just to be on the safe side. You might want to use a very fine grit paper as well. Maybe a wet or dry paper from an auto supply store. It's usually pretty high grit. It'll take a bit longer but the result will be more in your control than with a larger grit paper. I don't do anything to the scales a new Emerson. After about a month of carry and use, the scales are perfect for me. But... I usually don't clip mine either. They go right down in my RFP.
