Smoothing spyderco opening

I have a frn delica that opens stiffly, not very smooth. Any way to make the blade open more easily and smoothly, or do some of these come tight and some loose?

Try a drop of oil and repeated open/close cycles, perhaps while watching TV.

They usually loosen up after 100 or so cycles.

Hope this helps!

ok, here's what you can try....put hot water into the pivot area. Dry it out, then whilst still warm, put one drop of militec or other lubricant on each side of the pivot. cycle it a couple of times. voila - smooth opening delica. You can also loosen the pivot by flicking the blade open (spydie drop) a couple of times.

I have worked the knife a couple of hundred times and it is still not as smooth or easy to open as some brand new ones I've tried. I will give the hot water treatment a try with some lube. Any other ideas?

This tip supplied, to me, sometime ago by Dexter Ewing:

Use Sentry Solution's Tuf-Kote

A few drops worked in and let to dry overnight.

Then repeat for a couple more times.

Trust me it works...

PS - Thanks Dexter!! :)

My delica was quite stiff at first but it's just right now. Here's how I fixed it. First, I washed whatever lube was in it out with dish detergent and hot water. Next, I opened and closed it about 1000 or more times. I mean, I'd work the action 100 times every time I picked it up.

I think my success came from NOT using lube during the break in period.

Break it in THEN lube it.

Anyway, it worked for me. Good luck!

the hot water treatment is to wash out the old (probably gunked up) lube. You can't use boiling water as that may affect the nylon washers (very thin - less than1mm).
That itself (w/o any lube) may be sufficient to smoothen out the action (I don't think there's a real need to lube FRN spydercos).

However, for extra babying....you may proceed to use a little lube. After that you've got to disperse the water (hair dryer), then whilst still warm, apply militec / lube. The residual heat somehow "improves" viscosity of the lube, thereby ensuring that it reaches the nooks and cranies.

Remember, a little lube goes a long way - too much, and it gunks up.

Try militec - it's the best lube in my arsenal thus far.
