"Smuggling " A Blade On Board Aircraft?

OK, here's a problem I've lost sleep over: if a blade is borderline legal (say 4", which I know is technically legal in most states, but has been known to raise the ire of security guards......) and carried abroad a plane in hand luggage, undetected by x-rays, is it being "smuggled" aboard? In other words - and please excuse rambling writing style - by not calling it to the attention of security guards, have I committed any sort of crime? Should I have alerted the guard? Also, and I guess this sort of follows, am I then in trouble if it is "found" sometime in the course of my trip, either on board the plane or at another airport? Can I be charged with anything for simply having carried it on board, even though I did not carve up anyone or perform any other mayhem? Am also curious if this same reasoning might apply to blades that have no magnetic "foot print" - like titanium, nylon/glass, etc.? What happens if I carry one of them and it is later found in my bag? Thanks in advance for any advice.

If you have a folding knife with a blade under 4", I wouldn't worry about them not finding it and then finding it later. Since it's ok w/FAA reg's, you won't do time over it - though, if they find it on you while you're in a "restricted" area, e.g., in the terminal, they will likely confiscate it. Rule here should be, if they don't see it, don't show it to 'em.

As far as knives that may not be detected by a metal detector, titanium, nylon, glass, ceramic, G-10, plastic - DO NOT GET CAUGHT WITH ONE OF THOSE ANYWHERE NEAR AN AIRPORT!! just don't
