Hey boys,I did not jump the fence.I gave my reasons for trying the GH.Give me a break. The SN1 was well fitted and finished. That is what I reported.Would you expect less than the absoulte truth from me?As if I would give it.This is my final word on the matter. It is not nice to bug me.

Jeeze... Didn't realize there was a "fence"... I have both HI's and GH's, more the former than the latter because I like them more.

I have given GH's as well as some HI villagers for presents to folks not familar with khukuris. Figure they will throw it in a corner or use it and fall in love with it. Always explained that if they want more, GH and HI have the real things though HI is better quality (and, yes, costs more).

I admire your openmindedness and willingness to give someone's products a chance, Ghost.

I have no problem with anyone buying from GH. I just don't care to do business with them myself when I can avoid it by purchasing HI blems, visititng kami made, or villagers for close to the same price.

Strictly personal preference.

ghostsix,

I own two GH Khukuri's: both were very low money since I got a WW without a handle, and the SN1 with a loose handle (I am in process of makinga new handle for it out of cherry). These two wre my introduction to khukuri's.

I am looking to purchase a blemished HI, or a GH Ang Khola soon. I am khukuri newbie, and I think the most important thing I have learned was ANY khukuri is GREAT. I use it as a tool around my yard, and to clear paths.
I see no harm in owning more than one brand of khukuri - if this is the case I guess I shouldn't even read in the HI section

, since I don't own a HI yet. I have seen, handled, and used a HI - does that count? LOL I will admit, the quality of the HI product is greater than a GH: HI's are thicker, nicer finished, straighter,...so on.
Why did I buy a GH then? It was cost - I wanted to try them out 1st before I stepped up to a HI. Just my thoughts.....

I'd guess that 90% of my customers have a khukuri not manufactured by HI. It is good to compare and I do not feel ghost jumped the fence. He has maybe 6 or 7 HI khukuris and another special order that I hear is finished after 4 or 5 months. Can you believe that, ghost? Finally finished -- but will the owls look like Mickey Mouse?

Like Bill, I don't think anybody "jumps the fence" by owning both GH and HI.

Although I do happen to disagree about the qualitative difference (reference Ghost Six's opinion that the engraved SN1 he got was as good as any khukuri and better than many), there's room at the table for everybody.

Personally, I think that one cannot say that "all GHs are better than HIs," or "all HIs are better than GHs." In my experience, I've seen and held both. I have seen models from both of us that, were they to be used as a reference to infer the overall quality of the entire line of GHs or HIs, would result in different conclusions.

Would it be fair to judge HI based upon those couple of broken tangs? Of course not. Would it be fair to judge GH on a one-year-ago model or the "gonesailing Panawal"? Also no.

Just my ruminations . . .

I'll say only this. Shop 2 has hit their stride and the kamis there -- Bura, Parkash, Kumar, Sanu and others -- are putting out the best quality khukuris I have ever seen made in Nepal and I have seen thousands. The quality of the latest offerings has astounded not just me but everybody who has one.

Pakcik Bill.
Any news about GRS @ GS #1 @ 18" Kumar Special Baraba @ 14" Baraba? - I guess all those are from Shop 2. HIKV? NEPAL HO!

To be fair to Craig I did a bend test on the SN1.It passed.I clamped a third of the blade between wood,in a vice, and gave it some force.I think, due to the hard spine,it didn`t band like HI`s,but niether did it break,or fail to return to true.It is a pretty khukuki.

I have both H.I., G.H. CS, and a few no name khukuri's. What can I say, I'm a curious sort of person.

I enjoy reading honest reviews on any knives. Well, except folders they don't really interest me.

I was afraid to do this.I really thought that it would break,or at least be damaged. It may well be damaged,in structure I don`t have an X Ray machine, but my big mouth got me into this.

Ghost: thanks too from me. It's good to see that the engraved models don't compromise the utility of the blade. I had feared, after reading Bill's post somewhere else about some kamis forgetting to harden blades after engraving, that they'd done that to yours - glad my fears were unfounded.

Wouldn't that be bad for business, Craig? An unhardened blade bending and breaking, you'd never hear the end of it.
