Came across this little snake on a hike today. What kind is it!

Might be a juvenile Elaphe vulpina -- Western Foxsnake.
I await confirmation or correction by someone more expert.

that's an eastern milk snake... they look a lot similar to other species, but you can tell them apart by the tan "Y" shape on the back of their heads.

I vote for milk snake. It sure is pretty. I hope you didn't kill it! (i would figure most people in this forum wouldn't kill a snake, just saying it to say it :p)

i found a tiny one while i was walking in the woods today, no more than 5 or 6 inches long. they're beautiful creatures.

I say milk- but milkies, pineys and rats can look very similar. most of the NA colubrids are like that, and it's getting weirder as people crossbreed and stuff gets out into the wild.

I am guilty of killing every single rattlesnake that I come across. Most other snakes get a pass.

Can't agree with 'killing every rattlesnake I come across.' Lots of them around here in the desert and along the Rio Grande Bosque (marsh). If they're not in my yard or pasture and an immediate threat to my grandkids or pets I leave them be. They're a necessary part of the environment and I've never seen one go out of its way to attack a human, or any other large animal for that matter. Sure, startle or disturb one and it might strike, but usually it hisses, rattles, and leaves the area. Live and let live....

Its doesn't look like a milk to me. But thats a tough call. It is probably a black rat or a fox snake. Hard to tell at this angle. Do you have any shots of the head?
