Snake ID

Went for a hike today and saw this little guy on the side of the trail. Can anyone identify what type of snake it is?

He was in Connecticut in a rocky area near the bank of a river. If I had to guess, his diameter at the thickest part was about an inch.

I'm no expert but don't most water snakes have that bulgy-eyed look? Their heads remind me of a frog.

On a similar note, I was weeding the side garden and ran across the garter snake that's been inhabiting the patch for the last two years. It was good to see this old friend.

Thanks for the advice Tony, I'll be sure to bring it by the next time we go camping;). Actually, the fact that they bite repeatedly if picked up was one of the first things I read about them.

Once they realize you're not a threat, they tame down fast.

I want to meet those watersnakes. I never had any calm down with me no matter how long and gentle I hold it.
