well.. finally the blade has been completed.
:)

the gods of knifemaking have fought this blade every step of the way, but finally it is done.

this is for our very own Paul Vandine... and i sure hope that he likes it ... he has been waiting long enough

the whole theme of the blade was for a snake look .. to go along with a certain persons nickname :D

Specs:

blade is straightened cable (so the pattern would look like snake scales) ..
clay packed heat treating..
also .. the blade was hand filed and stone ground .. no belt grinder for this thing.
and its damn sharp (as my finger can tell you)

the fittings on the handle are copper (that i melted down and forged out myself from bits of scrap)..that have been textured and also has silver snakes twisting around them...
the menuki are two little silver snakes ..
rayskin same under a traditional tsukaito wrapping
the scabbard is covered in seasnake, which has been lacquered, and has two silver snakes wound around it also.

these arent the best pics in the world .. i had to quickly take them today as the light was fading outside .. but i will get some better ones tomorrow i hope.

Wow! I must say I am quite pleased at the way it came out! Can't wait to get it in my hot little hands!

Thanks Dion!

This is just really way to AWESOME!!!!!!!!! :D
Man you are doing some really great and fantastic work.
I need to make a trip over there and have you show me how you do some of the jewelery work on your Blades.Wish I had the finances that would allow me to make the trip,Bummer...
Great Knife.

I have always loved the more traditional looking Japanese style knives. This one is one of the finest examples I have seen. I believe you when you say it was a bear to make. If Paul doesn't like it might I suggest a good shrink for him to visit?

That is one of the most unique and beautifull knives I've ever had the chance to lay eyes on here at the blade forums...I love knives with very 1 of a kind things, like the seasnake covering. You're a very lucky man to have this knife, cherish it.

Man, just goes to show you that if you want to have something really special made, give a true artist a theme and the freedom to just go where the flow takes them. That is breathtaking.

While everything on the knife just comes together, my favorite elements are around the (pardon my poor use of terms) tsuba/habaki area. Too cool for words.

Nice work Dion...I'd like to see some more pics though :)

All my attempts at constructive criticisms and compliments were sent via email, and I hope they were well-received.

I think you did a very nice job with the piece, and I hope you continue to do this sort of thing and further refine your abilities :D

Man, that is Beautiful! That style is what made me a knife nut in the first place.

thanks everyone.

im just glad that it meets your expectations, paul.

Robert- yes i did get the email .. thanks for the comments .. though i think you are the hardest critic to please. :D
i will reply when i have 5 mins.

i will have to take come better pics, but it has been raining here constantly for the last few days and so i havent had very good light for the pic.
but they will come.

there is also a stand that is in the works too .. so i will have to show it all together when it is finished.

Paul has been a supporter of Dion's work from the get-go. I'm certain this collaboration effort has been long in the making for some time now. As is often the case the wait is well worth it. This is quite a piece!

Congrats to BOTH of you men! :D

Coop

Thanks Coop, I love Dion's work, it is way underrated IMHO. As for the Tanto I had him make me a Mini which sits on my desk very nice, this one is way above my expectations, I am VERY pleased!

I told him to go for it and he did! It will be one of my most treasured knives.

BTW Dion didn't say that he sent thses pix to the AKG (Australian Knifemakers Guild) and they want to take photos it may end up in Australia's only Knife mag!

Kudos Dion! And thanks for the Awesome Tanto!
