Ah poor old Samuel L. Jackson . Doomed to play second fiddle to a bunch of C:G:I: snake wizardry . Who am I kidding ? He may enjoy playing such roles . There are those among actors who relish in action movies . It mayhaps stirs their blood . Not that I have seen it . It does at least seem horrible enough to suit as some early halloween fare .

I am about to discuss what appears to be something more first string for him . It does seem he can break free of sensationalist films . This is a movie that I have only caught a few glimpses of . It is at least better than a movie critic who watches a few movies trailers and slams or praises what may be a fine offering or absolute disgrace .

I switched channels to this movie when it was well along in the plot .
The "Violin" I believe it is called . Samuel L. plays a bit more of a refined role in this . He repairs , researches the Provenance of and evaluates violins .
Before this is seen as a snooze fest there are interesting twists to the plot .
There are elements of absolute horror in the movie . They may even be better defined as depravity ? They do fit in with the plot . What I saw was neither gratuitous nor incongruous .

Certainly those among us who appreciate classical music may be taken aback
by the association between fine music and crime . In truth those with a touch of the macabre about them may see it a suffering for ones art . Well someone suffers anyway .

I deliberately turned it off so that I may watch it in its entirety . I did not want to destroy the illusion woven by some dream master . I hope that it proves to me at least that he has learned to enjoy some artistic freedom .

Kevin, you're in for a treat with "The Red Violin". I saw it a few years ago, and you are right. It really is a good movie and one of Jackson's best. When I go to see Sam Jackson in a movie I am comforted that I will get exactly what I pay for...Sam Jackson being the angry, loud, cool bad@$$ black guy. He has this down to an art where if anyone else even TRIES to duplicate this alarm bells go off in the viewers brain, "That guy is no Sam Jackson:mad: !" Really, his first "big" movie role, IIRC, was playing a bt part as the robber of a fastfood chain in "Coming To America". Guess what...he played an angry foul-mouther robber before Eddie Murphy beats him up with a mop:D

That said, some of Jackson's best stuff is when he is NOT so over the top. He has a handful of roles where he dials it back a little. Take "Pulp Fiction" for example. When you think of his role as Jules, you think of his biblical rant about "great wrath and furious anger" before he shoots up the place. However, I think his most powerful stuff in the movie is when he feels that something of a higher power influenced a series of events and he becomes quiet and reserved. Total bad@$$ from there on:D

Now, Snakes On A Plane (or SOAP)...that was totally alllllll Jackson's doing. This movie was going to start out as a straight to DVD craptastic little title to pick up at your local Blockbuster. It wasn't even going to be called "Snakes On A Plane". That was the working title. However, Jackson got his hands a script and fell in love with the idea. Didn't even READ THE SCRIPT:eek: Basically, this little movie had a major A-List star fall into their laps. They still wanted to change the title, but Jackson wouldn't let them. It also got pretty good reviews across the board. Saddly, I did not get to see the movie in the theaters. My wife is scared to death of snakes and wouldn't go with me. Also, the internet hype did not lead up to expectation. It quickly fell out of theaters. HOWEVER, expect HUGE DVD sales for this flick. This has Party Movie written all over it. Expect a drinking game where everytime Sam utters Mutha F*%*@! everyone must take a shot (maybe like the shot drink called a "snakebite"?;))

So ? The "Red Violin" it is . I am glad you didn,t illuminate anyone any further as to its content . I am hoping it is not "Over the Top" at all . I do not care if there is violence or horror in a movie . It is when the point of the movie is to titillate us with sensation instead of enthrall us with the plot .

It is his sensitivity in the movie . The tangled web he he weaves over his mind with his emotions . I am glad he enjoys himself in his movies .

Steely...He only drops the F bomb like 2 times in the whole movie IIRC...Snakes is a really good "B" movie and well worth the price of going to the theaters

Yea I have seen it a couple times and plan on getting the DVD!!!

Me and my Droogs are planning on watching it and them taking a drink everytime Jackson does something kewl or a snake kills someone

Yea there will be drunkedness going on...

And I get to enjoy there stupidity!!

Well that and throw errant drunks out the front door when they get to starting crap with the others :)
