Hello all,

As the title suggests, the backspring of the main blade on my GEC 66 Serpentine Jack has simply broken in half. I have not abused this knife, so I am not sure if this sort of defect in the knife is common. Has anyone else suffered this problem with GECs? It is a real shame, this was my favorite knife...

Backsprings don't simply snap in half. There's some sort of defect involved. Send it in, broken backspring and all. GEC should be able to take care of it.

Ouch! Sorry to hear about that, hope GEC can make it right

A failure like that should be covered under warranty - give them a call and let us know how it goes.

Very sorry to hear that, although I'm sure GEC warranty will take care of the issue.

That's one of my problems with GEC. Buying a knife, getting to love it and then something happens and it is irreplaceable because the pattern is out of stock/production etc.

Their warranty:

We warrant all Great Eastern Cutlery (GEC) knives to be free of defects in material and workmanship. GEC does not warrant its products against normal wear or misuse. GEC does not warrant natural handle materials after the use of the knife. GEC knives are not intended to be used as hammers, chisels, pry bars, screw drivers or used in any other manner for which the product was not designed for. Furthermore, any physical or cosmetic alterations to GEC products will void this warranty. GEC will repair any knife which it deems flawed and for which the factory is at fault. GEC reserves the right to replace parts with those that are on hand and not identical to the products original form. GEC may at its discretion offer a replacement product, either identical to or of similar value, to the costumer.

I am sure they will fix it. Backsprings should not break. It's not a common flaw, but has happened rarely since Adam and Eve carried the first Barlows!

I had this happen to me with a Case TB colab. I was thumbing the knife while watching a movie- the knife was in perfect condition when I placed it down. Got up the next morning and picked my knife up- and the blade fell out!! 😢

No one was around to have touched the knife so it must have been so fractured and then "tink".

Ouch.Duncan what happened about that in the way of compensation?

I've had it happen with 3 knives, (none of which were GEC), and in each instance it was a totally non-violent occurrence.
