What size snare wire works best for you? I am reassembling some kits and need to buy more wire. I thought it would be good to get suggestions from the crowd.

For me, it would depend upon the size of the animal I hoped to snare. Some of the trappers I've known used relatively thin copper wire for Arctic Ground Squirrels and like-size game. It is easy to shape and strong enough for that size animal. For larger stuff, I've used thicker braided steel cable with the black coating.

so I can un wind it and use thin pieces for sewing and whatever, or I can double triple it up for larger creatures of the night.

I use USGI tripwire, the stuff that comes with 2 40' spools each of yellow and green wire, all on one spindle. You get 160 feet of wire, and can use it as-is for wiring stuff together, or double for mid-size game like rabbits and such. It probably wouldn't work real well for BIG critters, but the price is right: about a buck for a roll.

If you're planning on snaring big game like deer, you'd need aircraft cable, the small braided stainless wire.

JJ ..you could try Chagnon's trapper supply..they have lots of supplies for whatever size trap you desire...

I was able to go shopping yesterday at the local (goin' outa' biddness) KMart and found several picture hanging kits at 20% off (@ $.70) which contain screw eyes, hooks, nails and a six foot coil of wire. All items are useful either around home or on the trail. So I'll try that this time.

Thanks for the help!
