Well, I have been making scales now for a couple of years and have finally perfected my methods. Please excuse the pics, however, I just wanted to give a sneak peak as to what I have been working on. All sets are close to completion, so excuse any imperfections at this point.
As for how I make these: I start by thermoforming a Kydex liner to the blade, leaving a perfect fit for the scale. I then epoxy the Kydex liner to the material (either my own hand-pressed micarta, or phenolic G10). Once this is comlplete, I then router the material to the templates I have made, giving the scale its shape. After this, I can finalize the finish, and drill for the hardware. The hardware I use is similar to the hardware that comes with a set of ESEE Izula scales: stainless spacers/barrels, and steel (low profile, button-head torx) screws- from USA Knifemaker.
A little about myself: I am a law enforcement officer by day (and many nights), and an artist/craftsman by trade. I have degrees in Industrial Design, Graphic Design, Visual Art, and Sculpture. I have taken a bit from all of these backgrounds to make these scales (and Kydex sheaths), and am very happy to be a part of this community. I figured with my background and my passion for the community, I might be able to introduce a couple new ideas to the people that allow me to enjoy the work that I do.
I will be posting these for sale soon (as well as some others), so if anybody would like dibs, please let me know, and we can discuss pricing and other options (matching G10/micarta-handle fire rods, Kydex sheaths, etc...)
These Izula sets include Camo G10 w/ desert tan Kydex liners, hand-pressed denim micarta w/ coyote brown Kydex liners, and hand-pressed desert tan linen micarta w/ coyote brown liners:

Well I'm in the process of finishing some scales for the BK-11. All scales have a thermoformed kydex liner that allows the scale to fit perfectly. All of my micarta is hand-pressed. Let me know your opinions.

Holy fuark man that looks great!!!! You should make a guide on what exactly you did to make them.

These are great...Really like those camo scales. Was the original slab of material for that bought or handmade?

The tan set was made from hand-pressed micarta. I basically take 15 layers of fabric, and layer it together with fiberglass doozy resin, and compress it down in a homemade press that I built, to 1/4." At that point I thermoform a kydex liner and epoxy it to the material, allowing a perfect fit to the blade. Then I use a router and a template of the scale shape, and shape the scale. It's quite a process, but it has evolved pretty well, and I have yielded some nice results. The camo set is made from G10 (bought from USAknifemaker, I can not press micarta in the winter, due to the outside temps). The camo set has a desert tan thermoformed kydex liner, and a hunter orange G10 liner.

Nice work! I like the kydex formed to fit the hollow areas. Nice trick. The camo looks geat with the red. If you haven't checked out the BK&T subforum yet give it a peek. Again, nice work....

Those camo scales look awesome.
Did you make the liners, and do you make them for other knives?

The orange liner is a super thin piece of G10. The other liners are thermoformed kydex which fits perfectly to the blade. I only make them (currently) for the BK11, the Izula, and the Candiru.

Those look great if you ever make some for the larger beckers hit me up my bk2 could use some lovin!

Sorry to resurrect on old thread but those are beautiful g10 BK11 scales, do you still make them? Birchwood, how would I go about getting in touch with you on some?

Sorry friend, I've since moved on to making my own knives. I no longer do scales for any production blades. Thanks you for the interest though

Ok, I understand. Seems like the BK11 has been left out by most, the 14 has much more options on the custom scale front.
