Well, I have been making scales now for a couple of years and have finally perfected my methods. Please excuse the pics, however, I just wanted to give a sneak peak as to what I have been working on. All sets are close to completion, so excuse any imperfections at this point.
As for how I make these: I start by thermoforming a Kydex liner to the blade, leaving a perfect fit for the scale. I then epoxy the Kydex liner to the material (either my own hand-pressed micarta, or phenolic G10). Once this is comlplete, I then router the material to the templates I have made, giving the scale its shape. After this, I can finalize the finish, and drill for the hardware. The hardware I use is similar to the hardware that comes with a set of ESEE Izula scales: stainless spacers/barrels, and steel (low profile, button-head torx) screws- from USA Knifemaker.
A little about myself: I am a law enforcement officer by day (and many nights), and an artist/craftsman by trade. I have degrees in Industrial Design, Graphic Design, Visual Art, and Sculpture. I have taken a bit from all of these backgrounds to make these scales (and Kydex sheaths), and am very happy to be a part of this community. I figured with my background and my passion for the community, I might be able to introduce a couple new ideas to the people that allow me to enjoy the work that I do.
I will be posting these for sale soon (as well as some others), so if anybody would like dibs, please let me know, and we can discuss pricing and other options (matching G10/micarta-handle fire rods, Kydex sheaths, etc...)
These Izula sets include Camo G10 w/ desert tan Kydex liners, hand-pressed denim micarta w/ coyote brown Kydex liners, and hand-pressed desert tan linen micarta w/ coyote brown liners:
BK11: Camo G10 with hunter orange G10 liner and desert tan Kydex liner, desert tan linen micarta w/ coyote brown Kydex liner, and OD green and desert tan linen micarta with black Kydex liner.
