SNG break in

I just got a new SNG DGG two days ago. So far I love the knife. I do have one problem though. I'm sure that the smoothness of the knife will get better with time and that's not the main problem. The main problem is the lock. It is EXTREMELY hard to disengage (I use pencil lead to help with stickiness as that is not the problem) and I definitely have "strider thumb". Will the lock get easier to disengage over time, and how long until it will? Thank you

Sometimes I will do thumb only flicks (no wrist) or ill just open it slowly. Both have the same level of difficulty when disengaging

I noticed if you make sure not to put any pressure on the blade before you disengage the lock it helps. If I put pressure on the blade while disengaging the lock it frees sticky. You can put pencil lead on the lock face also.

I dont put any pressure on the blade before disengaging and the lock and I use the pencil lead which gets rid of the stick. the lock bar just seems extremely stiff

Your lockbar tension is not going to "break in." I am lucky to have big strong paws so I don;t have any issues, but I do agree that my Striders have very stiff lockbar. I would suggest bending the pocket clip away from the lock bar just a hair. Believe it or not, that pocket clip is adding extra resistance to overcome. In my opinion, the pocket clip need to be bent anyways as it is way too tight to use the way it comes from the factory.

On my Striders I put just enough bend in the pocket clip so that I can slide a playing card under them with little to no resistance. Just make sure you do this a little at a time because if you over bend it, it will be a bitch to try an bend back without removing it and putting it in a vice...

Another thing to consider is removing the pocket clip if you do not use it...

Hope this helps.

I've never heard of that regarding theocket clip adding tension on these knives. All the Striders I've handled Nd owned have enough space to fit a sheet of copy paper freely underneath.

I noticed the same thing with my DGG. After 3 weeks of daily carry and use it is getting easier. Slowly.

Thanks for the replies. Ill wait it out for now and if it doesnt get any easier ill probably bend up the clip a little. What would be the best way to bend the clip? by hand?

I'd back up what's been already said. Before you bend or tweak anything, give it some time. It'll break in super nice. All of my new SnG's were like this, and they've all broken in with use.

Pretty common on all frame locks as the clip is generally placed directly over the lockbar and is attached behind the relief that is machined into the frame. As soon as you press the lockbar and it makes contact with the clip, your are now also having to move the clip as well. I do not bend my clips to relieve tension, it is just a side effect of bending the clip. I just have a hard time getting Striders in jean pockets without relieving the clip tension just a bit.

I would also agree with others here who recommend letting the knife break in for at least a month or so with regular use before you start making changes.

I just find that I cannot fit the clip over my jean pockets without a little tweak...

Have to open and close it a few hundred times. Keep adding pencil lead. After awhile clean a bit so you don't get build up then repeat. Frustrating and crazy at the same time. Then all if a sudden poof! It becomes like glass eventually. It's so weird. Honest bro.

Keep on using the pencil like crazy and don't open the knife super hard. The lock will work in sooner or later.

I bought a new SnG in December and it was sticky as hell. It's worked in now but it'll get sticky again if I flick it hard enough.

Just keep the pencil with you while your watching tv or whatever do the following,

open knife, close knife, apply pencil lead, repeat..

Any lube on the locking surfaces will promote stickiness as well. Make sure the surfaces are dry and keep going with the pencil lead. As far as stiff spring tension, Striders will certainly vary from knife to knife. Each knife's lockup is custom tailored. Personally I'm in the camp of belief that bending IN to remedy issues is fairly safe...bending OUT is extremely finite and I would strongly recommend against it. I've had 5 SnGs and my current (Gen7) has the stiffest lock tension yet...personally I really like it! The knife may or may not "break in," but your thumb certainly can/will!

lol yeah, my thumb is getting calloused and its not hurting so much and I can push harder, so its not so bad anymore. Thanks for all the replies. You've all been very helpful on my first thread

The knife was built for hard use, and the target consumer frequently wears work gloves. I don't think Striders "break in" as much as the owner just gets used to them.
