SnG vs. Cardboard

Seems every time I cut cardboard my SnG gets well jammed up and doesn't cut well, nice sharp blade does utility cutting great, but the boxes just stop it dead in it's tracks. Anyone else have that issue?

I think it's too thick. My SnG is in the shop at the moment so i can't test it but my Spyderco Caly 3 goes through cardboard like laser.

I agree. Even with a sharp edge and a thin bevel, you've still got to drag the rest of the blade through the cardboard if it's a tall enough piece. SnGs have thick blades, so that could be your problem. I noticed the same thing with the two SnGs that I had.

Maybe smooth down the finish with some steel wool. It'll help cut down the drag. My Gen.5 SnG has a smoothed blade via usage and it cuts cleanly through cardboard now. Just did a bunch of Pizza boxes over the Holiday with ease.

One of my SNGs has a thinned bevel and gets rediculously, hair whittling sharp but it doesnt do heavy cardboard well either. Its just the thickness of the blade.

Try cutting the cardboard while holding the blade a bit sideways as opposed to the cardboard surface, this way the cardboard can move away from the blade very easy and the blade won't get stuck.

scotchbrite the blade... Bead Blast is the worst idea for a finish on a blade. I'd be suppeised if SnG owners with a stonewashed blade report equal difficulty.

My SnG cuts much better than the Buck Tarani with hollow grind and blade texturing. It is a thick blade, comparatively, but a lot better than a BM CQC 7, or a half dozen other large blade knives I've used.

Thin bladed knives are almost always better, and flat grinds generally rate high. The worst I've used are chisel grind tantos, the Tarani, or any sabre grinds halfway up the blade. Of course, a box knife is just about the best - thin, flat, and short.

I never could get a Randall, Swamp Rat, Nimravus, Kabar, or other to cut as well as any pocket knife. Blade thickness has a lot to do with it. But the SnG does quite well - if you keep the choil out of the cut!

SnG is really, really thick, and deep cutting on things like cardboard benefits from having a nice thin flat ground blade like a Caly 3 or Military. Go grab a really thin blade like a SAK or Mora or whatever you have, make it as sharp as your SnG and see for yourself.
