Nathan sends his thanks for the wonderful advice he recently received on the forum.

He says he looks forward to taking his nephew snipe hunting some day just like I took him.

He also says that just about any knife (which includes the Old Timer I gave him) will do. From his perspective, it's much more about attitude than it is about equipment.

Anybody else go on a Thanksgiving snipe hunt?

Nah, didn't have the time this year to go out snipe hunting. I really miss those good ol' times hanging out with the boys, eating fresh campfire roasted snipe and telling each other tall tales. Maybe next year.

How BIG was Nathan's snipe? Hope his was a REAL trophy!

I certainly agree that equipment doesn't make the man. How big or small his knife is really doesn't mean that much, it's knowing how to use what you've got that makes the difference.

Do you guys mean the snipe that doesn't exist or the one that does?

In Florida there's this bird that lives in the swamps that looks like a little egret or something and it's called a snipe. They shoot them with 12ga. shotguns.

It's the other snipe, Snick.

Are those Florida snipe any good to eat?

Well Uncle Bill I'm glad to hear that everything turned out O.K. Also how long did you hunt? Did you drag it out for a while?

Congratulations Nathan. Nothing like a successful snipe hunt to raise the spirits. (And occasionally to down them.)

You are a fortunate lad to have family and friends that will share this tradition with you.

Ah, the good old days.
I remember my first snipe hunt. And the second one to.

The great part about Snipe hunting is that the second is allways better than the first, and they just keep getting better after that.

Nathan,
Remember, it's always better to give, than it is to receive. Welcome, to the club.

Can't say I've ever eaten snipe or know anyone who has, never personaly hunted them either.

It's just that this whole "snipes exist" vs. "no they don't" confuses me.

Snick,

Nobody posting here or in the original thread said that the infamous Snipe does not exist. Quite to the contrary. All snipe hunters are Certain that they exist. Otherwise, what would be the point?

Hey Uncle Bill,
Have you been to the Web-site of the MN Snipe Hunters Association? See it at, www.snipehunter.com. It has a wealth of info an the history of the moon light hunts, and in the "What The Heck" section they discus hunting & flushing patterns etc. Enjoy!!

When I was stationed in Ft Lewis for the first time in '86(3/47 Inf - 9th ID) every now and then we would get a new private who had no idea about snipe hunting and so of course we had to indoctrinate him. Usually, fun was had by all.
Of course we used the old burlap bag, and axe handle and let us not forget the infamous snipe call....
