Does anyone else do this?

When you are out and about in public, at a store, etc., Looking at other's pockets to see what knives people carry around on a daily basis? I mean I am not purposely seeking knives, but I tend to notice clips on pockets, and in the split second I get a glimpse of the clip I always try to identify what knife they carry. (Then judge based on the knife :p)

I see most often, Kershaw Leeks, and Ozark Trail WalMart knives around here the most often.

I imagine that as knife enthusiasts we are naturally inclined to notice other people carrying knives. Just like a tattoo enthusiast would be more inclined to notice someone's tattoo or a techno-geek would be more inclined to have their attention drawn to someone's phone.

I'm no good at identifying a knife by just the pocket clip. At a glance I likely couldn't tell the difference between an Ozark Trail from a Spyderco or a Benchmade, and I've owned 6 Benchmades and 2 Spyderco's,

When I spot someone carrying a knife my general thought is "Cool, another person who sees the value in carrying a knife". And I can't help but feel a bit of a kindred spirit.

I am the same way; I don’t care what they carry but I am happy to see that they see that they are willing to carry a knife.

I'm happy just to see people in the wild carrying a knife!! Then I spend a minute or two trying to figure what's in their pocket!!

Many years ago I remember participating in one of our frequent company team building exercises; and the presenter had challenged us to put together an ad hoc presentation within a couple of hours. There were a few hundred of us, randomly segregated into teams of 10 and it was a highly competitive sales/engineering environment. As we read the instructions we had decided that we wanted to build a couple of mock-up displays to help with our presentation; so as I put the instructions down I reached for my pocket knife any laid it in front of me at our round table. Then we looked up and noticed that everyone had done the same thing; we were sitting at a round table with a colorful variety of knives arrayed in front of us. Today we would probably all have been arrested.

It's cool as a maker to go someplace and see folks wearing your knives. Sometimes I ask for a pic, sometimes like at a roping, I might just sneak a telephoto shot.

Also a great introduction: "Hey how do you like your knife?" Then after they tell ya, you told em ya made it. Instant friends. This young guy and his wife had flown to CA from Italy to watch this roping. I've shipped many knives to Italy but this was the only customer I've ever met.

Or ya walk into a bar and there's a guy wearing one:

A great way to get feedback too!

Not anymore, I've had a couple guys give me weird looks thinking I was looking at something else. ;)

JK, yeah. Sometimes. I've always felt somebody openly toting a big fixed blade (think combat bowie) in a restaurant was going overboard though - especially if they're the type of person that gives carrying a knife a bad name. Nobody is gonna require knife fighting in a family style chain place and if they do you should have had your ccw on you. There are more reasons to wear a nice vest or jacket than just looking snazzy.

I do it all the time. Usually I am disappointed by what I see. Unless you are a knife guy, anything will do, apparently.

Edit: Except for the time I saw a guy with a Buckmaster in a diner. I just about made a scene.

Absolutely!

Years back, I was working a bookstore register when I noticed a Strider clip in a customer’s pocket. “Nice Strider.” He couldn’t believe somebody else had heard of them lol. Dude is probably a member here. Sup bro if you read this, hope life and the knife are good!

I’m happy to see people carrying any knife. It’s the best tool and a sign of a thoughtful person.

I'm with you on this. It is common around here to see guys packing knives as well as the occasional handgun.
