I'm interested in getting a Snow and Nealley Axe, probably one modded by Brian Andrews. The problem is, nowhere around me sells them (that I'm aware of) and I've always been a bad judge of size without first-hand experience. Which of the axes (the Hudson Bay or the Penobscot) should I get? I'm looking for a good all-around camp axe, nothing for felling large trees or anything, more camp/hunting/survival use. Is the Hudson Bay portable while still being useful? Is the Penobscot too small to be useful? Any in-hand or in-use pics would be great!

Looking forward to your input.

my general all round camp axe is the gransfor bruks small forest axe which i have found to be both perfect in size and weight.

so if i were in your shoes i'd look for something of similar size. looking at brian's website that means i'd be looking to buy the Modified - Snow & Nealley Penobscot Bay Kindling Axe. its got an 18inch handle and a 1-3/4lb head. which is really close to the small forest axe.

since you stated that you arent looking for something for felling large trees and are looking for something around camp (which i would assume is mostly splitting wood and chopping to clear your camp site), than this is the one i would buy.

i have felled trees up to 6 inches in diameter with my small forest axe with no problems so i would say in a survival situation that penobscot would work just as nicely.

if there are no snow and neally retailers around you the best thing you can do is just grab a meter stick and hold it at the 18inch mark and try to guess what it'll be like. thats about the only thing i could suggest.

based on personal experience with axes and your proposed use for it, i'd say go for the penobscot

cheers,

JC

The difference betweent he two is the Pen Bay is a one handed axe that can be used two handed, if necessary. The Hudson Bay is a two handed axe that can be used one handed, if necessary.

Unless you need to produce a lot of firewood, say for a cold weekend, or are going to make pole shelters and the like, the Pen Bay would be enough. If doing more work, then the two-handed tool will mean less fatigue. The Hudson Bay is the same head with an extra 6" of haft, so it really isn't much heavier.

I've had a Hudson bay for over a year now.I really love it for camp work.In fact,I used it all weekend camping with my brother-in-law.Great axe.
