Yesterday evening, I took my boy out for a hike on a local paved trail after we got a dusting of snow.
The trail encircles a small lake that was mostly frozen over.

We stopped about halfway, heated up some water with my SuperCat stove, and had hot chocolate.

Saw hundreds of turkey tracks along the way.

Not sure what kind of little bird this was though.

Curious - roughly how long is the average wild turkey print heel to toe?

About 4-5 inches. Some of the tracks belonging to big toms were noticeably larger than those of the smaller birds.

I've taken my kayak out to that little lake before and seen the turkey flocks wandering around. It's in a state park with no threat of hunting, so the turkey are more used to people than your average bird.

Cheers. I'm wondering if turkeys have ever been wild here, if not why not and all that. A quick search is just getting me a lot of noise 'cos of wild + turkey, but I shall come back to that when I have more time.

Cool pics, I hope there is still snow on the mountain tomorrow when I get up there.

Good opportunity to talk some basic frozen lake survival tips and show him the dangers from shore - hypothermia, acceptable thicknesses, open water hazards near creeks, weight distribution, fall-thru recovery, etc.

Great pics by the way. He must have lapped-up that hot chocolate :)

Thanks for the link and pics. I like the look of that stove. I have played around with some soda can stoves and wasn't thrilled. This design interests me. Great pics of your hike too.

I can vouch for the Super Cat stove. It really is a great stove and costs .35 to make! Can't beat that!
I've played around a TON with those home made type stove. Constantly looking to make better and more efficient. Its kind of tough...their easy to make, but when you become consumed with it (like I was), it can take quite a bit of time and a whole lot of patience.

I keep a super cat in my BOB in my truck. No moving parts and basically indestructible. They (pop can stoves) are really cool and something you should consider in you day pack and your BOB.

The video below is one of my many. Check it out.

Very cool stove Guyon. Also looks like a great day out with the young one. I bet he had a blast, especially with the hot chocolate refreshments.

Since we never see ice that thick down this way, I told him not to go out on ice unless he sees a vehicle driving safely on it. :p We did talk about the dangers of falling through ice.

Hot chocolate is a must for our winter hikes. He really looks forward to the hot chocolate breaks.

markhait, do you use a wind screen with your Super Cat? Yesterday, I was thinking that one would likely help keep the flame steadier and heat up water faster.

Oh and FWIW, the little bird track above was identified in another thread as a sparrow or a finch. Google Images confirms that sparrow tracks look just like those in the pic.

Mistwalker. If you run out of that *^#* Snow, I can send you a couple train loads.:grumpy::thumbup:

Yeah, I use a wind screen with the cat stove.
You pretty have to with a alcohol stove.
I just take a length of aluminum foil and fold it a few times
to make it thick and sturdy. Make sure you fold up the open side
just up a 1/2" or so just so the bottom edge doesn't open up on you.
You pretty much can't go wrong with a cat stove.
All my attempts were to make a stove that would work
with a Heini pot. I just think the Heini pots are so cool!
Your stove though, has to have a small opening for the flame.
When you get wide, the flame just shoots up the sides.
I guess it would still work, but I just think its inefficient.

Not meaning to hyjack your thread and ill prolly be laughed at but im really interested in making a stove like that. What kind of alchohol does it burn. Basically id like to know a name brand and where to buy it so i dont end up blowing myself up. Thanks a bunch

Mike
