sigh...
Since last Saturday...4 inches of wet snow, followed immediatately by 3/4s of an inch of sleet, followed immediately by freezing rain. One day break, then 4 inches of drier snow...lighter to shovel. Temps at night dropping to below zero F, up to mid-20s in day (around 4 p.m.), THEN 3-6 more inches of snow, all temps below 20 in day, single digits at night.
Some light snow last night, 4-6 inches expected by Sunday evening.
Today, saw three hawks circling in different areas, each looking for something to eat. With the early and rigid frozen snow, under the lighter stuff, field mice, etc...are hidden. With their food sources hidden, gonna be some starving or dead from dehydration raptors around here.
The game birds...hell, all the resident song birds are already getting stressed.
Walking in this stuff is a nightmare, you step down in about 6 inches of settled light snow, then hit the frozen top of the sleet, then--sometimes--hear the cracking like ice breaking as you cross water, then may or may not break through to the original harder snow.
Nature's way, I know...but I'm using older legs this year and selfishly, would like to be able to hunt a bit before I hang things up.
When I take the time...I notice it is beautiful, in its own way.
