Snowed in and a Homestead Hatchet

Weather shut my jobsite down last week and made it difficult to get around in the outside world. We were essentially snowed in. I needed to come up with a hatchet for my oldest son's best friend before he goes on his mission for a couple years. This time off was perfect for the refurb of this Homestead hatchet head for him.

The garage was rather cold but I was able to keep warm by making a mess carving out a handle from some ash that I had laying around. It felt good to put some of my little used tools to use. I put a baseball bat style knob on the end because my son's friend was a ball player.

It turns out ash turns almost black when you coat it in a vinegar/steel wool solution. It went black almost immediately. After a few coats of BLO it is done.

I used black walnut for the wedge, not that you can tell.

The knob got his initials carved into it.

I hope he likes it.

Thanks Nank. I gave it to him this evening and he loves it. He is going to look for a sheath for it when he gets to El Salvador. Anyone know any good leatherworkers in El Salvador?

Looks lovely. I've never had any ash to play with but I use a lot of salvaged oak and I'd noted awhile ago that one of the "tells" for spotting oak was how black it turned around nail holes or any other place it contacted steel or iron.
