well...not like when it snows in Buffalo....

But we did get a nice dusting today that is still going and will continue through the night. The snow isn't as bad as the people. They crowd the streets and make it impossible to get anywhere. Took 30+ mins to go one mile this afternoon (usu. takes 4 min).

School is canceled tomorrow...no teaching, and the kids will be here at home. Which otherwise wouldn't be a problem...but Wendy is down with the flu. So guess what I'll be doing tomorrow....

:(

ROFLMAO! Canceled school for a dusting? We just got a foot here in Aspen. Not even close to justifying a delay. Cancel? What's that?

Sure is perty though aint it?

We've got 4 - 6 inches now and it started snowing again. The mountain roads might get dicey, but everybody will still travel.

18" on the ground (blowing and drifting) and more predicted, with high temps below 10 F for Sunday through Wednesday. Then it is supposed to shoot all the way up to 20 degrees below normal. Could reach as high as 15 on the 9th.

Hey, Dan, your kids could build an igloo -- if they really tried. :D

I just checked my own weather; snowing, 6 below tonight, 12 degrees tomorow.

Ya...it's bizarre...

I understood the mentality when we lived in Savannah. It snowed there once and people had no idea what to do with the stuff. Freaked 'em out.

But it always snows here in Arkansas...every year...and when an inch or two hits the ground, people lose it. They seriously run to the stores to get supplies. Plus, all the schools let their kids out at Noon...and every mommy needs to go pick up their kid because of the dangerous snow...which isn't dangerous....it's the drivers that flood the streets that are dangerous.

Anyway, it's frustrating but comical. I've decided to sit on the comical side and just sit back and laugh at it all. In the meantime, I'll be building snowmen with the boys out back.

Growing up out west I can only remember school being canceled twice: 1 - heaters broke down. 2 - the snow was coming down faster than the guys could shovel it off the roof. 2 feet in an hour-and-a-half or something like that. The roof started caving in. So we went home early. And everybody drove themselves home or rode the bus and I don't remember bad traffic or a rush on the stores or general panic.

Maybe times have changed.

*shrug*

I grew up in Minn. I was there until 10th grade and I can only remember two snow days. One storm drifted snow up to the second floor of our apartment complex... I can't remember the second one... so maybe it was only one snow day.

The Mnpls. school system had the strategy of keeping us in school until noon to get state aid for each kid in class... then sending everyone home at noon. It was always fun getting to and from school on those days as the buses usually didn't run. The old cliche... walked 5 miles uphill both ways in snow up to my waist... comes to mind :D

I grew up in KS. Back when I was a kid it seemed we got more snow than the area does now. I can remember driving down country roads which had been plowed, the snow piled up level with the windows on both sides. That kind of snowfall doesn't happen anymore.

Here in TX, we get more ice than snow, and the DFW metroplex is rife with overpasses and bridges, which freeze up in a heartbeat. So, everything comes to a standstill.

We actually got snow here in Mesa this year............:D Of course that was the day I actually managed to sleep in until 7am so I missed it:rolleyes: but I did see the news. Bad thing was that all my hibiscus and bouganvilla froze...........and they were so pretty this year..............oh, well, that's life:rolleyes: I could have used the pretty as I'm hosting 2 major functions over the next 6 weeks at my house. Guess I'll have to rely on my smile for the decor:D

We've actually had a "typical" January here in Iowa, unlike the generally warm winters for the last 15 years or so. Cold is coming though. This morning it is 8 below zero and the weatherman says this is the last "nice" day for quite a while. Coming week highs will be well below zero and lows probably below 20 below. Only about 10"" of snow on the ground so not too bad there. At least we've had no ice - too cold for that.

We got a little sleet and some fluffy flakes for a short while this morning, before it all turned to rain. Schools were delayed two hours. No big whoop. We rarely get snow here so it is nice to see it, even for a brief time.

Snow? I have seen pictures.......

I asked my father what made him decide to leave Conneticut and he said that he hated snow, so he strapped a small snow plow to the front of his moving van and drove South until he found someone who said, "What the Hell is that thing?"

And that was Atlanta. I share Dad's philosophy. I do not want to live where snow plws are needed.

Winter came reluctantly this year, we got only 6 inches on the ground instead of our usual 2 feet or so. But we did finally get some cold weather with some -30s and more coming this weekend. The wood furnace is running steady, and the oil furnace hasn't run in a couple of weeks. I usually use more oil in warmer weather, when it is harder to keep a steady fire going without overheating the place.

Glad the cold weather is here. The pine bark beetle is killed off by cold weather, and in recent years the winters have been too mild and they are invading the area. The folks living in remote communities can finally use the ice roads to get in needed supplies that would otherwise have to be flown in.

There is nothing like a good cross country ski when its real cold, brings up the appetite and keeps the BBQ busy.

I love the snow...just wish people here knew how to deal with it.

I went camping one winter at Lake Ouachita and got snowed in. Cold , but a lot of fun. One of my favorite places to camp, fishing is not bad either.

I saw 8 or so flakes here the other night. That was sufficient to cause panik.
