First off first time poster, and Ive already used the search feature... nada.

Im looking at replacing the gerber Evo Jr I have, but the Evo is a tad on the big side and im not overly impressed with the blade designs. (Much less the rumors im hearing about gerber going to hell lately and the fact they're a complete rip off of someone else's designs.). Its only draw back IMO is its just too short for my hand.

So far im looking at a:
CRKT M16-10
CRKT M16-12M
CRKY M16-01T

The blades on these arent exactly what im looking for, but om after a folded length of 4-4.5" The blade length isnt really important IMO as long as its 2.5"+ more so for serrated edges and tantos due to loss of blade. Id like to stay away from zytel handles, but im not ruling them out completely, just on the evo/M16 series due to construction. And if possible a full stainless knife. And no gawdy or gay colors :P

So any suggestions here? Any feedback on the M16 series?

the m16s are ok, but there are tons of other options in that range. if you tell us how much you are looking to spend, we can help you better.

the spyderco endura/delica is around the same price.

For a good enough knife I'll go over $100. So no dice there on narrowing it down. Ive been looking at several benchmades too. 912-71 stryker, 940, 942, 635... Thats part of the problem is theres a whole slew in this category. As for blade designs to narrow it down.. im not completely sold on tanto designs be it reverse or modified etc, just not ruling them out either.. noone has given me a good enough reason to dicount them thus far other then it takes longer to sharpen. (Ive never owned one so far) Id like to stay awar from fully serrated blades as I use them for scraping sometimes. I used to carry a cold steel vaquero and that is what made me change EDC's.

If possible a downward curving blade would be amazing for extra cutting power for rope etc. Mainly its used to open up boxes, cut rope, scrape contacts on wires and switches, cut wire ties, etc. General utility in a shop environment and household tasks. Occasionally its used as a kitchen knife when camping.

for curved blades the byrd crossbill with g10 handle and plain edge spyyderco tasman are worth looking at. the crossbill is less than less than 30 dollars, you could get something else as well.

I have a CRKT M16-12. On the up side the thick tanto blade is fairly strong and probably can stand up to a little abuse. It also feels good in the hand. The AUS8 in mine is pretty easy to sharpen and the wide bevel makes it good for free hand practicing. The tanto shap also makes it a little easier to sharpen since you can just go in a straight line, pause then go in another.
On the down side the weird chisel grind cuts well but it doesn't really slice. Also the different sides (right vs left) cut a bit differently so not the best for woodworking. The steel in mine is not that tough. It dings and chips a tiny bit on zip ties.
The one I have has a combo edge. I would advise against the feature. Most of the time I feel like I have half the blade to work with.

Overall it does do a good enough job. It goes through cardboard well enough and is my "work" knife. However I think you can do better.

A knife I have been wanting to get lately is a BUCK Vantage Pro. It has a deep carry clip, a liner lock, a basic blade shape, and is made out of S30V steel!! -for under 50 bucks! Just thought I would throw it out there. Also, I think all bucks are made in America, but I could be very wrong.

+1

Best bang-for-the-Buck. ;)
You can get them as cheap as $41.53!!!

There are LOTS of knives out there in your price range.

After looking at what you're going to be using it for, I'll recommend a couple:

An Endura in ZDP-189, or a Benchmade 710D2.

Both knives have blade steel that will keep an edge longer than most - especially useful if you're going to be doing a lot of scraping and box cutting.
They're also both really well made by two of the best companies making folding knives today. And while neither has a downward curving blade,
the 710D2 is "recurved" which will give you at least some of that effect.

I would suggest that you go look at Spyderco knives. They make excellent knives.

Wow, plenty of responses, I'll look them up tomorrow once I find some free time. Thank you all for your help so far.

Take a look at the Kershaw line while you're at it too :)

Lots of them :)

The delica is in, Byrd crossbill, Buck Vantage pro, Emerson knives makes 7 "mini" knives that look decent. As for the kershaws.. time to go look there.

Endura in ZDP-189, or a Benchmade 710D2.
While both very nice knives and extremely desirable steel (Specially the 710D2) I cant use them at work due to their restrictions. "Measuring from your thumb down your knife cannot be longer than the palm of your hand while closed" Thats work restrictions.... yay.. and they're sticklers about it. Nones been fired over it, but they do tell you to go put your knife in the car. And absolutely no sheath knives. So 4.5" is the maximum I can get away with. This is sadly the main eliminating factor right now Otherwise Id Be all over the 710D2, it almost fits the bill to a T.

Hmmmm.

Well, then, I'd recommend a Spyderco Delica in ZDP-189.

Not to dredge this sucker up from the dead, but I decided on one a few months back and its been working great since then. (Not mine fyi, but you get the idea)

Thanks for the suggestions guys... lots of those knives were great, well made. I just fell in love with a 940, but I wanted metal handles and a harder steel blade.. Lo and behold they had both in one.

I have that exact knife and love it. Limited 940 with d2 blade. Its my favorite folder(at the moment).
