My pearents forbid me to go Japan Knife Guild outdoor party, on 7/21-22.
They find a letter about party from JKG, I kept it secret that the camping is JKG.
My Farther said,
"In Japan, We NEVER need knife. It is only for killing, how you say, the public think so. Only it is important on real.
You must not have, carry, read any magazine or book, watch on store, buy, and LOVE knife.
You must EXPEL knives from your soul and room, and of course pocket. Forget all knowleage.

If you have knife leagally, if only loving knives in mind, it is bad, aresstedable, crazy, anti-society, and pervert.
How it is unphappy for us to be family of such a man!

If you kill someone, arrested by Gun&Blade law, or known be list of the JKG party or the like, My family will blake. All my, and your(my) brother and mother's freiends and persons concerned bissiness dump us. We lose job and home, our social life end.
If something about knife happen, I disown you.

Your theories to defend knife is no meaning on the public common sense. Marijuana is less injurious than sigarette or alcoholic drinks, but Marijuana is never permitted. Knife is the same.
Who like knives have gave up society and family, and be crazy humble persons. Never be so! "

I feel it crazy. But common sence in Japan.
And tell, "In U.S.A. all high men never have knives and guns."
I think, it have never been that U.S. President did'nt have knives and guns.

Umm... that all sounds pretty bad.

I'm not going to sit here and put down your parents for their ignorance and prejudice -- this is probably a cultural thing, to a certain degree -- but, as the old saying goes, the sword that kills is the sword that brings life. No object is good or evil by itself; only human actions make the difference.

Do as your parents say, since they basically own you until you're free to move out on your own. Once you can support yourself, you're free to pursue any hobbies you wish.

I know if I discovered the as-yet-not-conceived Razor Jr. or Razorina was secretly visiting the Handgun Control, Inc. website, or had joined the Socialist party, I'd have a pretty stern talk with him or her, too.

I'd slap the sh!t out of that kid. (just kidding)

basically, yes. do what your parents say.i dont know your culture to well, but i wouldnt want to be disowned (on the other hand...;))
whatever happens,good luck.

Chic, this is a tough one. Your father has very strong feelings against knives and that may be very hard to change. You could try to point out to him how useful knives are as tools and you may want to point out that knives are probably used in your kitchen and can be very useful. Maybe if you explained your attraction to knives and that most of the people who love knives aren't criminals. I think the best thing that could happen would be to get your father to go as your guest to the JKG party and let him see for himself who shares your interest.

I don't know how old you are, and I won't suggest that you disrespect your parents wishes, but you may just have to wait until you are your own man and can make your own decisions?

Thank you all!

Razoredj,

"the sword that kills is the sword that brings life. No object is good or evil by itself; only human actions make the difference."
Such theory as NRA say is not good in Japan. It is not problem that right or wrong, REAL COMMON SENCE. It is more than law, religion and all in Japan.

>Once you can support yourself, you're free to pursue any hobbies you wish.

No, he said "If you are independent after get job, Never KNIFE. Even after I die. I cannot parmit you being Anti-society parson, and break life of your Brother and factory's all menber and their families( My father is owner-president of a small factory. My brother working and will success it)"

MAURICE,

It is so hard to stop LOVING knifes! It is deepest on my mind.
It is not so hard not to carry, or have;

PhilL,

It is impossible to use knife in kichen!
Whatever, any knife was found, it is cnfiscated. Gerber Pixsy was not permitted, "police coming, we arrested"
Not weapon but tool; how many times I said! but it is no meaning, as problem is Real in Japan. Japan's common sence never permit knife, as your knives will blake our life, he said.
I am 26 years old, and planning to independent.

Chic,
Sorry to hear that. You must obey your parents. At least as far as they will know. Feelfree to read about and love knives even if you can not carry them. Mayby you parents would allow a leatherman multi tool or a micra? One of the tiny swiss army knives? Save up your money and come on over here to the great USA. You can carry as many knives as you want. Depending on where you are you may want to carry a gun or two and a switchblade or balisong. I thought Japan had a rich knife history? There seems to be many designs based on old Japanese designs. Good luck with whatever you do.

...Just because the law says, does not mean that it is right.........

Chicahiro's experience is an illustrative example of generational incrementalism. For ages, the the Japanese culture contained a highly defined martial componet. Weapons and their proper use was codified with values such as honor, loyalty, and preservation of self and clan.

A half century ago, the nation loses a war; political and social changes shake the country at the roots. The revisionist history movement quashed information as to the political and economic motivations for the war and simply blamed the military. Ban all weapons because it's the weapon that's bad; nevermind the dumbass political decisions that led to a war that Japan could not win (even Japanese politicians are blameless). It was simple to proclaim anything military related as evil. This made conditions ripe for Socialist influences to take hold; now a strong anti-self defense mindset prevails. A Japanese father telling his son that knives are inherently evil....Who could imgaine such a thing!

Thousands of years of culture washed out in few generations by socialist lies.

Further, using values such as family honor and loyalty to shame a young man into immasculation is tragically sad.

This same incremental social immasculation is ocurring in our society today. I recently met the 20 year old son of a Marine Corps Major. Not only had the young man never fired a rifle, he believed that weapons would "go off by themselves", because he had heard of such things in the news. I gave him his frist safety and shooting lessons.

The Son of a Marine Corps Major......who could imagine such a thing!

No Kitchen Knives?
What are you talking about? What do you do rip apart your meat and vegetables to cook? If that was true there would be cops all over the set for the "Iron Chef". I've been to Benne Hanna and they throw knives around and play tunes with them while they prepare your meal. Hey there's an idea go to Chef's School.

Chic,

Why dont you just join a Iaido or Kendo School. I dont think your father would have a problem with you practicing the traditional arts of Japan. You wouldnt get a knife but a Katana would be a good start. After he sees that you have respect and are responsible with the blade he might reconsider. Besides its a lotta fun! Good luck with your quest for sharp pointy objects. :D

Hello Chicahiro. I am sorry for your situation!

I'm glad you have come to talk with us here at BladeForums. We can all feel sorry for your situation. While you should have respect for your father and your family and their beliefs, they may not always be correct in their beliefs.

Perhaps you could get involved in traditional Japanese martial arts? Judo and ju-jutsu would allow you to get martial training, and possibly meet other knife and sword people. You are 26 years old, but I know that Japanese culture is very different from America's.

Is it true that your family does not have ANY knives, not even in your kitchen? That is hard to believe! Kitchen knives are very valuable tools in their own right.

Keep trying to talk with your father about the benefits of knives, if you think it will help. Maybe he will change his mind.

Good luck, and keep visiting us!

It's not a theory, it's a fact. And it isn't just some NRA slogan. If your culture no longer recognizes that fact, I'm very sorry for you -- but it doesn't change the validity of my statement.

You say you're 26 years old. I thought you were posting about your parents' restrictions because you were a dependent child. Since that is not the case, I'm a little amazed. If you can't be a man and live your own life -- if you're actually going to let your father control you after his death, for crying out loud -- I cannot fathom why you've posted this complaint here (other than to reinforce my negative perception of contemporary Japanese society -- Seth makes very good points about incrementalism at work).

Be a man, or be a slave. It's your choice.

"The sword that cuts down evil brings life to those upon which evil would prey."

Is a Japanese proverb and a basic belief of Bushido.

But the forth tenet of Bushido is Ko and it says

To resect and care for ones parents.

I would try one more time, stating how important the knife/sword is to Japanese culture and history. Some of the most respected men in Japan are sword makers. It is not to make a weapon or a tool, but to keep alive a thousand years of Japanese culture, RIGHT;).

Some of our leaders do feel the same ways as your parents do, We just have the ability to vote them out of office. But I would bet that every last one of your countries leaders have a sword in their home or office.

Japan has had such a strong influance on all of the worlds knife and sword makers thru out history, it is sad that beliefs like your parents have taken hold.

I am flabbergasted! I had no idea Japanese culture had declined to such an alarming level. Several of my knives were made in Japan so I assumed all Japanese had access to excellent knives. If I understand what you are saying, to own and carry a knife in Japan is the equivalent of a crime, a blasphemy, and a rude gesture all at once. Amazing. It would be easy for me to tell you to follow your heart and to hell with this utter nonsense, but I am not you, and I do not share your cultural perspective. I agree with those who have said move to the USA. Either that, or make a stand. Change has to start with someone taking a stand. My guess is that you will pay dearly for it if you do. It is your choice though, that's what being human is all about. Good luck.

In Japan, We NEVER need knife. It is only for killing

Follow your father's wishes and expunge all knives and all sharp or pointed things from the house... kitchen and table knives and forks, of course. Anything can be eaten with chopsticks. No kitchen knives at all. And there are a lot of potential knives in a typical kitchen. The blades in the bottom of a blender or grinder, for example, so make a special effort to get them all. Pencil sharpeners, tape dispensers, letter openers, and of course all razors or even electric shavers (there are little blades going around and around inside there, you know) must also be removed. Anything that cuts or pierces or shaves or shreads anything else is violent and must be removed. This will restore peace and tranquility to your household.

I know if I discovered the as-yet-not-conceived Razor Jr. or Razorina was secretly visiting the Handgun Control, Inc. website, or had joined the Socialist party, I'd have a pretty stern talk with him or her, too.

That's what internet filtering software is for: to protect children from websites that might corrupt their thinking.

"In U.S.A. all high men never have knives and guns." I think, it have never been that U.S. President did'nt have knives and guns.

W! is, in fact, a knife collector himself. He received his first custom knife from his father, the former president.

Clinton went hunting a few times during his administration and there are pictures of him carrying a rifle.

Reagan is well known as a gun owner.

People sometimes forget that Jimmy Carter is actually ex-navy and, therefore, has at least some experience with guns and knives.

I've seen pictures of JFK out hunting with a rifle and someone posted a picture in one of the forums of a young JFK on a sail boat with a rather large looking sheath knife hanging off of his belt.

Chic...,

Hey buddy, send me a round trip airplane ticket to Japan, and I'll come and have a talk with your dad. (...Ya have any cute sisters?.:D.:D.).

Isn't Kendo a martial art from Japan that uses staff, sword, and KNIFE? Talk to your father about tradition. Maybe even print-out a copy of these threads, and just leave it "laying-around" where he can see it...(IF he can read our "English" babble.:D.).

Good luck, my friend.

Let's also keep in mind that whatever the laws are in Japan regarding knife ownership, they most certainly are not as strict as the one's Chic's father has apparently imposed. Which makes this whole debate even harder to understand. Obeying one's father's wishes even after death? Yet posting here on a knife forum, no doubt in defiance of that father's wishes? Something here doesn't add up.

Gollnick had an EXCELLENT idea! You should become obsessed with following your father's beliefs. Remove all sharp objects from your home and business. No razors, no forks, no scrapers. Nothing that could be used to cut or stab another person should be available. No blades of any kind. No pictures of knives, either!! Check your books and magazines, and every Shimbun each day for pictures of knives or guns or other weapons. When you find them, RIP THEM OUT WITH YOUR FINGERS!! Then make a ceremony of burning the offending images as a peace offering.

Ask your neighbors to do the same. Do they not want peace and harmony? How can they live peacefully with pictures of any weapons around? Pictures of weapons will encourage destruction!!

If your father objects, then tell him you became interested in knives from seeing these harmful pictures! Does he not want you to live free of the influence of knives?? Then you must remove all that reminds you of knives!!

You should outdo your father. Make him proud of the ripped books and magazines! Make the community proud to smell the burning pictures!
