So can anyone get me up to speed on these new camillus knives?

I have a few older camillus in my collection and love them. Have they returned to their former glory, or did someone simply buy the brand?

Looks like the knives are all 440 or aus8 with some vg10 thrown in. Which is pretty good for the prices 20-60 aprox it seems.

So does anyone have any of them? I am thinking about nabbing one or two.

Last I heard the Camillus brand name was bought up by Acme United. I can't speak for the quality of the new ones, but they are not made by the old Camillus.

They make Anvils. So they know metal.

I have a new Camillus , china made with VG10. It's got the black coating they use. I question the heat treat they use on the VG10 as it does not have the grain, or performance of Spyderco's VG10. It doesn't like getting as sharp. More like 440C than VG10.Not bad, but not as nice as VG10 can be in Spyderco, Moki, Seki Cut, etc.

The liner lock isn't great, but adequate.

It's good to see US made 1095 knives sold under Camillus name.

Any chance of a picture, Joe?

A.P.F., sorry it took so long to respond. Believe it or not I don't even own a cell with a camera. Nothing currently to take pictures with until my kid gets by with some time.

It's not exactly Spyderco/Kershaw/Benchmade quality but it's not bad either. I do believe it's VG 10 but it's sure not as nice as I'm used to. I've carried Spyderco's with VG10 since they went to it. Maybe over 10 years?

The liner is a bit thin, and not what I'd like but it's carryable. I bought it to try it out. For the same money I could get a delica, so it's going to be my last.I paid over $60 for it at KC.

I doubt it's really VG-10 if the knife is made in China and not Japan.

Likely something else like AUS 8 or AUS 6 or maybe 440 something.

the marlin spike looks like a good modern take on that design. the rest of the folders don't appeal to me i think only 1 or 2 offer any other clip options besides tipdown righty.

regarding the Vg10 china i assume its whether the company really follows the restrictions. i bought a Browning VG10 knife that is definitely VG10 but made in china

I see some designs that look a lot like Terzuola designs, anyone know if he's doing any collaborations with them?

I don't know about China but I know Spyderco imported a small amount here and made a handful of Chinooks in Golden with it. They are rare and not likely more than one or two in the wild though.

I know that's not proof but it is a very popular steel. I could see Chinese manufacturers wanting it for the name recognition. Someone with more knowledge than me needs to talk about the Takefu foundries policies.

Think it's pretty widely known that VG-10 China and VG-10 Japan are not equal.

Thanks for answering Thomas. Is it not equal in composition or quality, or just manufacturing?

It's hard to get straight answers, but when you're talking about a steel of this caliber, performance is usually the first topic of conversation. Edge retention would be a place to start when seeing differences between the two steels that "in name" are the same.

Sorry for the drift here. Back to your regularly scheduled thread now...

I bought one if their fixed blades and the bolster fell off right out of the package. Got the replacement and it rattled as I took it out of the clam pack so I gave up and Camillus is now a nogo brand for me.

I would think that would be an understatement. :D

Likely not even the same steel at all.

VG-10 and N690 for that matter are very different in the way they look almost with a wood like grain.
