with the crazy prices for 184s, 560, 186 titaniums etc on the resale market is it the collectability and rareness of examples that drives the prices alone or is it the design and ability of the knife itself? or a combo of both?

im wondering who would spend for new release of these types of designs? if that ever happened and i expect it wouldn't but if it did......would it downplay the pricing and collectability of knives like these? or have little effect as the original , nostalgia and rareness of the originals is what matters to serious and casual collectors alike?

I've always felt that BuckMasters and anything Harley Davidson are the most over valued relative to their intrinsic value and quantity produced. Gee whiz, yes there may be a few scarcer versions of the Buckmaster but generally the were made in huge numbers. And look at HD stuff, almost all were build quantities of 3,000, compared to normal LE productions of 100-500.

jbm, the 184's, 186's & 560's have historical value among many knife collectors. They express an era. The handles are of 100% titanium and are different colors. These drive the prices up. I think I've seen one with a ti coating handle recently that is not as pricey. I never liked the deep finger grooves or the clip blade so, I never shelled out the coins for one. And I'm still glad for this move. But a lot of knife folks do like them and will dig deep to have one. DM

makes sense. thanks fellas for your insights. appreciated.

I'll usually go for some of these only when the price is in my limit. As a result I have not picked any up for the last 5 years or so. Last one was a crystalline Ti 110T, without box or papers, on the bay for a very good price. It was a real stroke of luck to pick it up.
