Hello all,

I am going to be getting my first custom knife in the next week or so. It is a Brian Tighe Coon. I'm very new to custom knives but have been collecting Production Knives for several years.

I was wondering What you all got as your first custom knives and possibly show picture and tell me of your experience with the makers.

Like I said I am very new to this and just trying to learn as much as I can because I think this will be a life long hobby for me so anything I can learn would be so helpful.

Thanks,

Dave

Welcome!

The Tighe Coon is an excellent value priced knife. I have one in high polish and black lip pearl inlay. The combination of button lock and flipper works exceedingly well.

This is a knife to be used and enjoyed, if you are looking to make a profit on it, unfortunately the aftermarket has responded favorably to some makers and not to others. While Brian's knives offer truly superb value, they tend to take a small hit when resold...currently. I do think that will change....and as it becomes more difficult to obtain a knife from Brian, the prices will go up.

I don't have a picture of my first custom. It is a wonderful cocobolo handled, ATS-34 blade made in the Loveless style(fighter/Chute) by Larry Page of Aiken, SC, and was purchased in 1985. It now resides with my good friend Hubba. The initial purchase was perfect(NYCKS), but I later asked Larry to sharpen the top edge, and it took a long time to get back....which is why I learned to do it myself, eventually.

Overall, the Custom Knife World is filled with many great people who are top notch craftsmen and just all around great to talk/visit with and Brian is one of them. His work is superlative and as a person, so is he.

Best Regards,

STeven Garsson

Welcome to BF and to the world of custom knives. I bought my first custom in 1988 off a table at a show in SC. It was a slippery slope from there with mostly good experiences. Do a lot of homework and try not to be too impulsive, ask me how I know. I loved working with makers and have hardly ever bought from a dealer, I like the interaction and acquiring what I want. Do not get caught in a trap by makers you're not up to date on, never, almost never, pay up front for a knife that has to be made. Giving something for custom materials is OK, otherwise there a lot of horror stories. Good luck!

My first custom, maker Sam Cox, still have it:

My first custom knife was a Jared Price Ti Folder in cpm154. I bought it from him at a show. He was very personable to talk to, as I've found most knife makers are.
