I just recently reconnected with some family in Florida. Most of you know how passionate I am about fishing. Some of you who camped with me know that camping in the everglades has always been at the top of my to do list. Now what if some how I can combine these two things??? Enter long lost cousin Omar! I haven't seen him in about 12 years. I just recently got a friend request on facebook from him. So we get to talking and catching up and bam! I find out that he is a fishing guide in South Florida. He specializes in trips around the everglades:eek: So my flight is booked. I am leaving April 17th to introduce my wife and daugter to my family in Miami. We are staying for a week. Three days of that week Omar is taking me fishing and camping at the Flamingo campsite of Everglades National park. I feel like a little kid!

This is my cousin's website.

Anway, I know there are a few of you that live down that way. I am sure Omar is gonna recommend some things for me to bring, but what say you?
Also, if there are any good field guides for edible plants down there, please let me know.

I don't have any recommendations, but if you forget your camera the BAM-right in da kissa:D Sounds freaking awesome, congrats on re-uniting with the family and the great trip!

That's awesome Tony! I love that area! If you have time you should walk the prairie trail out to the cape and check out the view. If not enough time see if you can go out the canal by boat. It's been years but I'll never forget the view and the feeling that came from standing out on the cape all alone in the off season. It was like being a castaway. It was a humbling view for me. Just remember there are things down there that can challenge your position on the food chain.

Wow - talk about luck.

I wish I could reconnect with a long lost cousin that specialized in fishing for Alligator Gar in the south - that's my dream trip.

Have fun, bro - take plenty of pics.

Hey GS,

Good on ya! Take lots of pictures and don't forget to spend part of that time with GD and GGD.!

What good luck for you. Congrats.
Of course, bring knives!!!
Also I would recommend a Tilley hat...Airflo or Mesh crown.
Lite as a feather, great fit, crushable, washable, lifetime warranty AND quite a dashing look.
I receive compliments quite often when I wear mine. And believe me, it MUST be the hat!
Check 'em out at Tilley.com.
Enjoy your trip and reunion.

Thanks fellas! I will bring home a boat load of pics, hopefully there will be some fish in them as well!

I really don't want to bring alot of gear down. I am sure my cousin has a tent, but I would love to bring my hammock. Does the Flamingo campground have plenty of trees, or is it more like a beach???

very cool Tony....Have a ball brother. Send me your blades for safekeeping.;) (especially your skookum:p)

Looking at it on google maps...haven't been there in years...there are some trees, you may get lucky and have a good set up for a hammock.

If you go out to the cape take a few pics. Given the time period I was there and some lessons learned... it's somewhat of a spiritual place for me...I wouldn't spend spending a few minutes living vicariously through you lol.
