I stray from time to time, but eventually return to CRK for their great designs, stellar quality, and great value. Some get it, some don't, and that's cool. I wasn't a fan-boy of any knife maker until I got my first CRK. They have earned my loyalty..
I agree, I was one of those who did not get it until I got my first, and it wasn't a 21, it was an Umnumzaan; I was drawn to it the minute I saw it but was always beyond my reach. I was one of those people who think I can do the same thing with a PM2 or a 21, which is to cut stuff with it, and it is true, but to me when the magic happened was when I had the chance to own a 21, I had carried a PM2 in my pocket for three years straight and it still cuts the same, but it was quickly replaced by a 21 without any second thoughts after I experienced it for the first time.
There are other makers that I really like and still carry and use, so I don't really think I'm a fan boy per se (I think I'm becoming one though); what is indisputable to me is the quality of materials, the simplicity of design and the innovations that Mr. Reeve has brought to bear upon the whole industry. When I found out that he had actually invented the "frame lock" I was blown away because I always thought it was a genius design in any knife.
It was only until recently that I bought a plain 21 here in the exchange and what gained my admiration is the precision of its construction; after all the research I have done and after experiencing first hand the awesomeness of this knife, (after taking it apart) I don't think I will carry any other knife anymore.
I really like the graphics, and the artistry of some of the ones Lisa designs, like some of the ones that Lone Wolf has posted; but to me is the mechanics that did it. When I see tolerances of less than 3 tenth thousands of an inch, maybe even less than that, I get excited somehow, I love that about CRK, and that to me makes them actually cheap for what I'm getting; and you are right, that is a lot of value.
Now my goal is to have at least one of each model, even their fixed blades, and that will probably will take the rest of my life, and maybe my retirement fund!
I know, I talk too much.
