I'm re-reading Lonesome Dove, something I do about every year and a half (greatest western novel ever!). I was wondering, guys ..... say you got the call to ride with the Hat Creek outfit from Lonesome Dove up to Montana, what knife goes along for the ride? To make it interesting, let's keep it to knives you currently own.

For me, I'd probably select my yella cv Case trapper.

I'd take a large sodbuster in honor of Gus' clasp knife...

Interesting dilemma...

This Schatt & Morgan Harness Jack ought to do.

I'd have to go with the sod-buster, but mine has a black handle.
(Just because my name is Gus) :D

I think that about sums it up for me as well!

But don't forget that Russells butcher knife on his belt.

I think that was only in the mini-series version, JK. I don't recall any mention of his fixed blade in the book. (I do remember looking at both Call and McCrae's fixed blades on my dvd version but we're off the hook since the OP only asked us for our choice of slipjoint. ;))

Not counting fixed blade knives, I am headed out the door to the stable with a big ol' clickedy clack GEC Pioneer 4 inch double bladed toad stabber.

You're probably right, I haven't read the book in years, but I have the boxed set of the mini series on DVD and watch it about once a year. Great stuff there!

Now back the regular program.:)

Buck 319 stockman with leather punch in my vest pocket(you can't dig in you pants pocket with chaps on sittin in a saddle) and a no-name green river curved sheath knife I own to go on my pistol belt. Small sharpening stone somewhere on my hoss...

horse riding & access to knife gives the sodbuster with belt sheath carry is a nessecity .in the saddle a pocketknife is difficult to retrieve.remember that long rides were usually in the company of chaw bakky.

If anyone here thinks it might be a reasonable idea to use chewing tobacco, please feel free to pm me and I will do my best to change your mind, with 43 years of solid tobacco experience to back me up. I quit on 31 December 2006, just in time to save my life. I hope.

Really? Gee, and all this time I thought it was 'Cuss'. ;)

I'd take a large Boker Sodbuster that a member here gave me.

Can we take two, if they fit the criteria?

If so, for backup, I'd take a small Case Sodbuster that I bought for my son, that he insists I use whenever possible. :)

I need to sit down and watch the series again.

thx - cpr
