I like my new #71 but I'd like it in wood more - I'm wondering about getting a second one and putting some wood scales on it? Has anyone done it?

I haven't done it on a #71 before, but I have rehandled a few Case soddies and several GECs. It is totally doable though, but it requires some tools and precision. If you would like, I could break down the entire process for you, but I'll need some time to put it all together. Awesome project though! If anything, you'll gain a huge appreciation for what goes into making these suckers...

I'm happy with my Micarta and if they come out with a #71 in wood I'll buy that one also. If they don't I'm happy as a pig in slop to have the Micarta.

So, the first step is to take the the knife apart. What you can do for this is take a thin kitchen knife and tap it between the blade and the liner until you cut the pins. Once the pins are cut, punch out one of the pins to release the tension, and the knife will come apart. Now you can either reuse the existing scales and bolsters, or you can cut your own. I'll be posting step by step progress pics of a knife I am making for a giveaway in this thread:

This will give you a basic idea of what you need to do to make the liners, bolsters, and scales, but I will be posting a thread in a few days with a full breakdown on how to disassemble and re-handle a knife. I'm pretty busy with work and a few knives right now, but I'll get something up soon.

I just added the first half of my progress on the giveaway knife in the link in my last post above^^^ check it out!

really helpful mate thanks very much

I've decided to buy a couple of cheap folders (imperial schrade sodbusters) to practice on before I tackle the GEC

will let you know how I get on

I don't know what the story is with denim micarta or why you don't see companies using it very much but I love the look and have heavily contemplated having some custom work done on one of my spare 71s.

I just added HUGE progress post in the giveaway thread! This should really lay out the rest of the process for you guys.
