will a 1 inch push dagger thats been cut out of a billet of damascus steel, ground to shape and then sharpened with Japanese water stones be? I'm talking no heat treating, tempering or anything.

I mean, will the lack of any hardening make a difference with a 1 inch blade?

How sharp an edge could it get? How long could it keep it?

Now the same question, except the blade in question is is a 4 inch tanto?

I ask because some guy showed up at the local flea market hawking this stuff. He was very honest about the fact that there's no heat treatment. Nice elm wood and abalone shell handles, tho and the Damascus was also very nice. (this is in Korea, bty)

Ummmmm, no matter what he cuts it will soften the edge much quicker than had he heat treated it. Steel is, what, at 40RC hardness? While HT steel should be around 60RC.

Good for a few cuts, then a disappointment. He's looking to make quick cash without spending the time to learn and apply the needed work properly.

He is a discredit to all handmade makers who actually spend the time and heat-treat their knives as a long-term cutting tool, and will damage the reputations of them to the uninitiated. Stay away.

I wouldn't have anything to do with a knife that wasn't heat-treated. Doesn't meet my definition of "knife".
