Hey guys,

I'm wondering if anyone from Los Angeles has been to the IMB Academy with Sifu Richard Bustillo.

I am thinking about going and was wondering what the JKD classes are like. I understand that for beginners, PHASE I, there is no sparring????

This is unappealing to me because I mainly want to get down and dirty with real sparring experience, rather than just do drills.

Anyone know how it is?
Thanks!

Blade, how much experience do you have already? If you just want to scrap, you can probably find a "fight club"/backyard NHB arena somewhere. IMO, if you only spar and neglect technique/drills, you CAN get tough but you will "peak out/plateau" relatively quickly. If you put the time in with learning technique and drilling, it may take a little longer, but you will become much much better. If someone doesn't have decent ability (aka control) or attitude, they shouldn't be sparring. That being said, there is no substitute for actual combat.

Thanks for the quick responses guys.

Eskrimador,

I have actually had email contact with Sifu Rich and he seems like a very cool man. I'm sure he is an extraordinary instructor, which is one of the reasons I am interested in the IMB Academy. I am actually looking forward to attending a trial class on Monday night...

Samuel,

I don't have much "formal" MA experience. Actually, I don't really even have too much "real life" fighting experience either. However, I do have good natural reflexes and strength, agility, etc. and I know that I can become a great fighter with the proper training. This being said, I definitely agree that drills and other training is absolutely crucial to good fighting. I agree totally.

My only concern is that I would like to have at least some sparring incorporated in the drills and training, in order to become accustomed to a more realistic situation.

I guess I made a mistake in posting this thread prematurely. I should have waited another day, after which all of my questions would probably be answered during the complimentary class. I guess I am just too excited and I got carried away.

I appreciate your responses though.

Take care
