Late spring early summer my wife and I are taking a trip to visit her sister in Virginia. She lives right on the Holston river in the Appalachian mountains, so naturally I told them I was going camping in the mountains for a couple of days. This is the reason for my large knife thread however due to some kitty cat issues the funds wont be there for a knife in the 7 inch range. So my question for you guys is in that environment would you guys feel under knifed with an RMD?

i would feel a bit under knifed if i did not have a really small knife to go along with the RMD
like an izula,SW,ect
but i would prob be fine once i got used to using the bigger knife for the smaller taskes

The RMD is plenty of knife for camping in the Appalachians. I have used my 511 for every needed task in that environment, and it the same size as your RMD.

RMD will be perfect unless you need a chopper.

I have used my RMD CG to chop. it works excellently for its size. Granted I usually use, and prefer a larger knife for chopping.

Just to make you feel better, there are a lot more bears in the area than just ten years ago.
the last one I saw, ran off when the wind changed and it smelled me from over 50 yards.
But it does still justify a nice big knife!

I would prefer to go with something like my M9. It seems like you are saying you don't have an option though so guess you gotta do what you gotta do.

The RMD is plenty big, and it's tough as hell. I'd say you could even go with a smaller knife and be fine.

Patrick, you could always get R6 without the top guard, you'd get into the half way in size between RMD and the 7 inchers you were looking at, a definitely better chopper, and if you got FFG it would not be too bad in the slicing department either.

I gave done a ton of camping in the Appalachians. The RMD is plenty of knife. The M9 will weigh you down on those high incline hills. No reason to have a big chopper as you won't be building a big fire. Bears aren't going to be slowed down by any knife. They want your food, not your life. Be smart a hang your supplies.

Also don't forget a nice folder for small tasks. I found myself using my dozier folder for most things.

Good idea if its a possibility for him

I agree the R6 is definitely a better chopper. Mine is saber ground but still slices plenty good. Of course not as good as my thinned out FFG RMD does but it still does well enough.

I would think the RMD or R6 would do the trick. I am a bad person to ask. I tend to take way to many knives with me on hikes.
