My first Balisong (that should have been the title) is a cheap Rostfrei, why becasue I'm poor. We I say poor I mean I am a college student (an art school no less) and a musician. My bass is worth more than my car. So I hope you know why I didn't buy a 42.

First my girl friend loves knives too, plus she is Filipino. So she never bugs me when I play with it. It's first day I'm doing pretty good, so I decided to try some arials. Hmmmmmm......did I mention I am blonde???? Well I have a very nice (and deep, to the bone of my pinkie) hole in my right palm. She is laughing at me, I'm bleeding all over the carpet. Oh well, so I've been working my left hand then I broke the damned pins on the first day...argh. So now my left hand is much better though. Also when and were can I pick up a non-velco sheath??? Preferably kydex. I've rambled on enough now,

yeah, cuts are annoying. but as you get better they'll get lesser. I only get a bad cut maybe once a month or so.

and welcome!

No pain no gain.

Try to tape up the blade when you're practicing aerials, this way you won't cut yourself much when you make a mistake.

As for the kydex sheath, i believe you can order from www.thedgeequipment.com .

Um ... try not to be too embarrassed ... I've made the same mistake myself; in fact in my case it was my second mistake. My first mistake was thinking my new knife was a Solingen. That was what was stamped on the tang ... how was I to know Solingen is a city in Germany? (There are numerous knife factories there ... Solingen is to knives as Detroit is to cars.) So then I thought it must be a Rostfrei ... that was what was stamped on the other side of the tang ... how was I to know rostfrei is German for stainless steel? (Rust-free, literally.) Many have made the same mistake with knives stamped with the French word for stainless steel, inox.

So, whatever brand your knife is, it isn't a Rostfrei. It may not have been made in Germany, either, sometimes knives made in other countries for the German market are stamped rostfrei, but if it also says Solingen on it it was made in Solingen, Germany.

Hey Batangueno...what was the link again. It doesn't seem to work thaks though. And I apoligize for the mis-naming of the balisong. It is a cheap Jag...all it says is Rostfrei. BTW won't taping the blade, like damage my manhood??? Just kidding, except my girlfriend is still laughing at me (this all happened yesterday). Thanks,

Junior

Do you guys put alocohol on your cuts? Will it get infected if I don't? Anyone know where I can get a shealth I can wrap around my ankle? Do you guys usually tape your blades? I don't cause I wanna get used to it...is that a good idea? Or is it good to tape the blade? thanks.

You got balls man...arials on your first day? I was almost afraid to touch the knife.

Thank you for the very fine compliments, Mr. Anagarika. I do appreciate it.

As for tape, well, I view it as a perfectly fine training tool. Tightrope walkers usually practice over a net just in case, especially when working on complicated new tricks. You can read more about tape at

Some people say, "Pain is the best teacher." But fortunately I am not such a poor student that I necessarily need the best teacher.

As Mr. Little_chaozu suggests, all cuts should be cared for seriously. My next door neighbor lost his arm to a small cut on his hand several years ago. A number of years ago, when I lived in Tennessee, a member of my church got a simple paper cut as he was organizing his papers after boarding a five-hour flight. The plane landed three hours later for a medical emergency. He lost only the first joint of the finger.

Untreated, almost ANY cut WILL become infected in only slightly. Life and limb threatening infections from minor cuts are rare, but every infection slows the healing process. That's why all cuts that show any blood should be washed as soon as possible in clean water and then given a dab of antibotic cream such as Neosporin (a very small fraction of the population is seriously alergic to the Neomycin that is the Neo part of Neosporin and of course should not use it or any other "tripple antibotic cream" but should opt for "double antibotic creams" which are also readily available). If a cut is at all serious, keep it covered with a bandage for at least the first couple of days.

Any cut that goes to the bone requires a doctor's attention immediately since the bone may be damaged and require some advanced care.

Of course, if you have any questions or any concerns, DO NOT do what my neighbor did which was to ignore the problem. See a doctor immediately.

Anyone who plays with balisongs should be sure that their tetnious (sp?) vaccination is current.

<font face="Verdana, Arial" size="2">but if it also says Solingen on it it

I'm not sure about French law, but in the US, if a knife is marked Solingen, the blade must be made in Solingen, Germany, but the rest of the knife can be made and/or assembled anywhere as long as the other nation is also noted if it is not the US. There are some companies in Solingen, Germany that abuse their Solingen addresses by making cheap blades and marking them with the Solingen name, which, being physically located in Solingen, they are allowed to do. They then send those blades to China, Pakistan, and so forth, to be assembed into knives which are, overall, very poor quality. Those knives are then marked with a little sticker that says "Assembled in China" (or wherever) and imported into the US. It's illegal for them to do so, but disreputable dealers then often remove the little stickers and try to sell the knives as fine Solingen knives. So, just because it says Solingen doesn't mean that's one of the famous Solingen knives.

That's a quote worth printing out and sticking to the refrigerator.

Gollnick is right that the whole knife might not have been made in Solingen, too ... I probably should have mentioned that.
