Bought an orange griptilian 551 and a pink mini griptilian 555(? Sheepsfoot) for the wife. She loves it, I love it. Now what?! I would love g10 scales I think or if I'm lucky enough a Doug Ritter s30v version. Maybe I'm not seeing what everyone else sees in Benchmade as I can't quite lock on to another model I can sink my teeth in to. I'd like 3.5" or up.

I would go 710 for the next model. Closer to 4" in length but it is fairly light and carries very slim in the pocket for it's size.

Take a look at what Keyman has to offer if you're going to look at some scales for the Grip.

Years ago I fell in love with the Griptilian and purchased every version I could get my hands on. I then spent alot of time looking for a comparable Benchmade that I would love as much as I do the Griptilian. I liked the 710, I liked the 940, I liked the MPR but it wasn't until I purchase the Rift did I find a renewed love for the Benchmade knife. I still love the Grip. but the Rift comes in a close second.

So I like the look of both the 710 and 940 but would rather pick the 710. How does the D2 steel hold up in comparison to s30v or their 154cm?

They do a great job with all three of those steels. I've gotten D2 the sharpest out of the three.

What about the 810 from Knife Works? Larger than a grip, better steel, stronger design. Also look at the new 710 in M390. Further, the Ritter in M390. Man, some good choices!

Doug Ritter's RSK now comes in M390 steel. If you like 3.5"+ blade is a must, then I would recommend Rift 950-1401 from Cutlery Shoppe. It is 3.5" plus and comes in S30V, instead of 154cm.

If you like 710, then KW has 710-1401 in M390.

Grip was my first as well but the 940 is the Benchmade that made me say "whooaa, siiiick!" -and become totally addicted :D
Another vote for the Rift as well. Similar size but the G10, full liners, (and Cutlery Shoppe Haloween colors) make it a very viable alternative. Good luck in your selection and don't forget to post up some pics of whatever you chose

I have the 810 from knifeworks in M390 steel and it's awesome. Built like a tank and by far the sharpest knife I own even after weeks of use. M390 is amazing steel so I'd ho for something in that. I love my Contego and the Blue/Black scalloped G-10 with that satin, strop polished M390 reverse tanto blade is one gorgeous sight to behold
