And I am not a happy camper. Earlier today I found myself in possession of a little extra cash, so I decided to head on over to Bass Pro and do some browsing. After looking over thier decent selection, I decided to get myself a Large Buck Vantage in 420 HC. After paying $37 for my knife, I headed out to my car to open up my new knife. This is when my problems started. The knife was dirty out of the box, with some crud on the blade and around the pivot. It was also somewhat stiff, but I initially attributed this to the fact that it was new. The most serious issue, however, is the blade grind. It is way off center. For an American manufactured knife, I would expect a hell of alot better than this. I tried loosening the pivot a little to try to make it easier to open, but the knife has developed a nice, Spyderco Tenacious-esque grittyness. I'm pissed off and tired, so wait till tomorrow until I disassemble it.

A shitty pic of the shitty grind.

Bill, I think you overpaid. I got mine for $26 online. That is a small matter though. I think you'll like the knife if you give a chance.

These knives are sharpened by hand in a limited amount of time, so the uneven grind is not surprising. I have it on both my large and small Vantage selects. It does not bother me as long as the knife is sharp, which it is. If you have the time, watch my video: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jLKjOhgZ8Vw

The Vantage is a great knife if you are willing to put some work into it.

I have three and they are all like that cool knife for $30 but thats about all I would pay for this knife.

Man hating the Vantage? Impossible! Mine was rather gritty and poor at first, but you give her a little love, and she will make sweet love to you hand. Such a superb flipper when you get it clean and oiled (if yours isn't a defect, that is possible). I just wish Buck ran the 420hc at 60 instead of 58 on it. 420hc at 58 is seriously soft (to me at least).

Strait from buck's site...

THE BUCK FOREVER WARRANTY
The Buck Knives Forever Warranty is pretty much what it says. A Buck Knife is built to last. But if for some reason, your Buck is defective due to materials or workmanship, you can return it to us for repair. No matter where you bought it.

We will repair your knife, including parts, labor and or replacement with a new knife at our discretion. Keep in mind, repair is not always possible or practical. We will replace your knife with the same or one that is comparable if your knife is no longer available. Please note if your knife has sentimental value when you send the knife to us.

Hope it helps!

You should have returned it and hand picked one since you were already there.

Buck does have a good warrant and service no matter what people think of their knives.

This is what I was thinking. If you're buying it in person why not take the extra time to check it out before leaving?

Yeah, most of the time if I buy from a store I'll go out to the car, open it and inspect it before I leave.

Hey everyone! Thanks for responding. To address a few things, even though I bought this particular knife "in person", I had no oppurtunity to really handle the knife since it came in a clamshell package. Of the two 420HC models they had, the one I got seemed to be the best, since the blade appeared to be centered. I am also aware I overpayed for it; I have kind of resigned myself to that any time I buy anything at BassPro. Since I used a gift card to buy the knife, however, I really don't care a whole lot.

Anyway, before I turned in last night, I gave the knife a good washdown with hot water and soap, something that seemed to fix the grittiness in my Tenacious. Sure enough, the knife was smoother when I got it out this morning. I'm still going to take it apart, though. It's better, but still not good. I'm really hoping this problem is similar to the grittiness that aflicts the Tenacious.

I don't think this really addresses you concerns, but one thing I want to do to mine that I haven't gotten around to yet is dremel down the shoulders just in front of the flipper. For me there is not enough flipper and this seems like it will solve than

I don't like the flipper, it's too small to easily engage.
