So, I broke my pickaroon.

I made this out of a thin piece of galvanized dog kennel pipe a couple years ago. It has worked well for stacking firewood and loading the truck.

Last evening I was moving some bigger logs around to get the truck up to the tree that had been cut down a few months ago. I guess I was being too rough on it because I ripped the pick right off the pipe by tearing the pipe. Note to self, don't pull 16" diameter logs out of a tangled up vine mess with one like this.
I just don't know if I can continue to collect firewood without this tool after having one. So, I took a trip to Lowes...

This is a lot heavier pipe. It should take more abuse than I will ever need to give it. The new pipe was about $4 and the dowel was $5. It came to about $10 after tax.

While test fitting, I got the pipe stuck and had to go ahead and just drive it home. I set the end of the pipe on the anvil and it was all I could do to get the end of the handle flush with the pipe.

At this point the wedge is just for looks I guess.

I'd have liked to left it natural metal but, I also like to see that thing when it's being swung around.

Well done. I applaud your tool making skills!

The only suggestion I could make would have been leaving the haft 1/4" longer than the eye/collar so that the wedge wouuld expand it wider than the eye and lock it in.

Great JOB!

I sent a link to my welder friends in hopes they'll make me one plus the one you made seems much more substantial than the original.

That's awesome, NY only suggestion would've been to heat up the end of the socket and flare it out some . Other than that I like it and I like the color.

That was the original intent. While test fitting and rasping/sanding the wood, the pipe got pressed on too far to pull off without risking damage. At that point I had to drive on the rest of the way in over the anvil. A pin for assurance.
You can see on the first one that's how I did it.

Oh, one day I'll get a new regulator. I had the one on the propane forge fly out the back of the truck in a wreck. I wasn't sure if it would be ok or not so I tossed it. I'll have some projects then. I've got some 3/8"x2" stock that would make a nice axe eye pickaroon.

Someone with real tools could squash mine. If he has access to getting thick stuff cut you'll be golden.

Gave it a workout today. Couple stubborn pieces had to be hit with the monster, but most was split with the splitting axe.

I wanted to try another one so I had about an hour tonight that I could slip out to the building. The round handle gets hard to maintain pick orientation when you start getting tired. No swell is means you have to grip too hard when dragging larger logs around.
Same idea as before, just with a piece of larger pipe and a straight axe handle. I've been meaning to trim some off the cider press before I make a handle for it anyway.
