I finally ordered myself an 18" AK with a horn handle. I can't wait for it to arrive.
I've been pondering this purchase for some time. A number of factors led to it finally happening. One of them is that I recently went camping with my brand new (but sharpened) Fiskars hatchet. It's a good solid hatchet, but I pretty much realized that while it does have an edge on khuks for splitting...
... it isn't all that great at splitting itself, because it's not really heavy enough for anything more than light splitting. Mostly what I'd be using it for is limbing and shelter building, which I gather khuks are better for anyway.
Of course, the final nail in the coffin was that I was browsing the stickied threads, and I came across this one, linked to in "Tips, Tricks, and Useful Finds": http://www.bladeforums.com/forums/showthread.php?t=352196
I think I've deliberated enough, don't you? (Look at the datestamp on the first post.)
