However, it is a knife that I have been missing for several years now :)

I was cleaning out my "man room" as we call it to make room for the new baby and when I was moving an old cedar chest it fell out from under it. I'm not sure how it ever got there or how it even managed to stay there. It does have some surface rust and I figured what better way to learn than to ask you all, the experts. So can anyone tell me a good way to clean this knife up good as new? All replies are greatly appreciated!

nice find.

lots of folks like steel wool and oil, and it will do a good job on lighter stuff. heavy rust and really dark areas i've found you'll make little progress even with allot of elbow grease. maybe i had too high of expectations though and didn't really put enough work into it?

i've had good luck with a flitz like product and one of those scratch free scotch brite pads to start with. that said, those really dark areas, won't be easy. i have gone after them with brass wool, and one of those cheapo throw away gun scrubbing brushes with brass bristles and flitz. that seems to do a pretty good job. the brass scratches less than steel wool and/or brush. which i guess makes the work longer, but removing the scratches from the work done, can take a long time also....so i guess it's a trade off.

i won't lie, it's a long tedious process and will take many sessions to make a real dent. i've also tried those rust erasers. they do well on loose and surface rust, on those serious dark areas....not so much. plus they leave a brushed finish, and it can look bad depending on which way you do the rubbing. they can be a useful tool though.

getting it back to perfect is tough. likely will require some power tool use. go easy though....and good luck on the project.

do us all a favor, or at least me and if you find a better way than i've seen told to clean it up, post it up with after pics, so we (or at least i) can learn a new trick or two. thanks!

Sharpen it, oil it, and use it.
The rust will come off quickly during use.

A man room is no place for a baby!
You could get reported to the ACPCA or some such.
