So I got a working edge on my knife today!

It wouldn't push-cut all that well even after the extra-fine stone (it slices very well), but I think the problem there may be that the edges weren't even >_< Are even edges something that will just come in time or do I need to do something special here? I'm no good with angles and guessing stuff like that, so don't ask!

Anyways, it's pretty encouraging for like 2 hours of freehand practice

Any more tips would of course be appreciated, and more thanks to you guys!

depends if the primary grinds are even on your knife to begin with. If they aren't, then when you sharpen with an even and consistent angle, the bevel will end up uneven. You'll get better with practice, but also make sure you're starting with an even surface, it happens even on higher priced models.

I would also suggest getting the best edge you can with the roughest grits first, the finer grits are for refining. My working edges would shave at medium Lansky (280 grit) I wouldn't bother with the extra fine until you were getting good edges with the fine.

The DMT fine is my coarsest stone (what is it, like 600 grit?), but no one has told me to work with only one at first lol.

yeah, 600. finer stones remove less metal, so if you don't have a decent quality edge before moving to the next grit, you're doing the same work with the slower tool. The DMT red is a stopping point for plenty of people, so as your starting point you should have a pretty good edge before moving to the green.
