So I guess Speedsave knives are not legal in Missouri?

So this week I was on vacation and my wife and I decided at the last minute to go to St. Louis and take my daughter (and us) to the Zoo there and look around. We arrived at about 3:00 PM and went to see the Arch. As we were going into the museum and such in the bottom (that we did not even know was there until we got there) I noted a sign prohibiting weapons and looked closer as I was carrying a knife and was hoping to avoid a trip back to the car.

It specifically mentioned no Kershaw knives on the sign, the models with an assisted blade were not legal. Blades under 4" OK though, so my 3.5" bladed CRKT D.O.G. was fine which made me laugh. My normal EDC is a little Chive which would not be legal and I carried the huge by comparison D.O.G. in just fine. It got checked by the first two guys and they said it was OK, then the guy running the xray machine asked about it again when it came out. :D Set off the metal detector every time I went through too! Checked out my ankles and decide my tennis shoes were somehow setting it off though I have no idea how. Ah well, thought it was funny and would share. Never thought to check out the laws on pocket knives before when traveling.

Did not expect that just to see a museum and gift shop.

Hmmm, the title should be Speedsafe, not speedsave but it does not seem that I can fix it now. Oh well, now everyone knows I'm an idiot!

I think it is only at the arch because I have not had any trouble anywhere else and I live in MO. Also stores like Bass Pro carry some of the speedsafe line if they were illegal in MO I bet bass pro wouldnt carry them

I also live in Missouri and I can tell you firsthand that St. Louis is in a world all it's own.
Somehow I wish Illinois would annex it to get it out of our state.

The Arch and surrounding grounds are federal land. As far as I know, MO laws don't have anything to do with the Arch.

Yeah, my cameras batteries were dead so I actually got zero photos at all at the Arch. I really wanted a photo too. The sign specifically mentioned these were Missouri knife laws but cannot see that backed up anywhere I looked online last night.

They were also searching purses outside before you even got to the entrance randomly it seemed. I watched a couple of 80+ year old ladies get their purses searched on their way towards the entrance.

I too guess this was because it was federal land, but whatever. Still had quite a bit of fun over there, now I only have 5 more weeks of vacation left to use.....

I visit there about once a year for wife's family... good info to know about the arch. My last visit, I sent ahead a 4" blade (custom), so I wouldn't have bothered to see the arch if it meant I'd have to let someone else borrow it for awhile.

That's too bad, Missouri is where my first choice med school is at.

Hey dblagent,

If you don't mind me asking, where in Indiana do you live? I'm an ex-Hoosier myself (lived there until I finished high school), although I may end up moving back there after I finish my education.

I'm south of Indy about an hour, official home of the IU Hoosiers! No more Bobby Knight here though, now what do we have to talk about?

Lived in 5 states myself now, settled here for a little while at least.

i live in tennessee and our bass pro quit carring the buck rush series because of the asap feature when i returned to get another one, and i do not remember seeing any assisted kershaws.....YOU MAY BE NEXT, but its cheaper online so it doesn't really bother me

Sweet, I grew up just west of Indy on I-74. It's by far my favorite state of those I've lived in for quite a number of reasons but top of the list is the climate. It's got all 4 seasons but none of them is overly harsh.

Wait, gotta add some knife content, I bought my first Kershaw ever at a Galyan's in Indianapolis.

don't use bass pro as the measure of whats legal or not. the idiot manager at my local bass pro (KC) told me that they didn't sell AR-15s because they didn't have the "special assault rifle FFL license". his store was though selling lots of rifles and shotguns, and handguns (that held 10 rounds or less only). what an idiot.

btw, this is the same store that, at their grand opening, had police officers driving through the lot writing tickets to anybody not parked perfectly between two lines. the place was jam packed and there were tons of cars parked in the grass, on the side of the service road, etc. they lost alot of (otherwise new) customers that day. REALLY bad first move on their part.

i'm boycotting bass pro, and so should all of you. they're not our friends - not for guns or knives. support your local family-owned gun/knife shops.

oh, and as somebody else has mentioned, we need to either give STL to IL, or just burn the damn city to the ground. 90% of the population is criminals and crackheads, and everything inside the city limits is in ruins (except the arch).

What a load of b.s.!

Everything except the arch is in ruins within the city limits of St. Louis? HA!

Busch Stadium? Union Station? Scottrade Center? City Museum? Art Museum? Edward Jones Dome? Convention Center? St. Louis University? Washington University? The Loop (recently named one of the top 10 streets in America)? The Fabulous Fox? Powell Symphony Hall? Anheuser Busch? Soulard? Dogtown? The Hill? Lafayette Square? MO Botanical Gardens? Forrest Park? Tower Grove Park? Yeah, these are all great examples of things that should just be burned to the ground.

Jealous much?

IMO, St. Louis is the only reason to visit MO at all.

Regarding the sign, my guess is that they are simply mistaken about the law. In addition, the Arch is federally administrated. Never underestimate the incompetence of the federal government.

i jusy spoke with a friend and he told me they took his leek when he went there a few weeks ago

Yes there are stories of people being arrested for assisted openers. I recall one in a casino where he had a Chive and was arrested for carrying an auto into a gambling facility. You'll also find a difference in opinion on how to measure the blade lengths and what a double edge is from officer to officer.

I have had some officers tell me the AO knives are no different than an auto and are illegal and that they would arrest me if I had one on me. Some tell me straight faced that it is a felony. Others a misdemeanor. Yet others gladly pull out their own AO Kershaw just to show it to me and tell me stories of guys arrested for something else entirely unrelated to the knife and of handing their AO knife back to them with the rest of their possesions the next day after a night in jail and this in my own home town so even in the same jurisdiction you'll often times get a variety of comments and answers when asked. I venture to say that if separately asked apart from each other two officers in the same vehicle would give you different takes on them.

What I've found is that many officers, while charged with enforcing the law, rarely actually know the laws they are charged with enforcing. Some are better than others at this obviously. This is a conversation that comes up in my family quite often with my son being a Federal Officer, a brother a Deputy and prison guard, and two close cousins both in law enforcement as state and city police officers. My father was a state police officer also for a time, and my grandfather a game warden. So we often times shared our own feelings and comments and many of these conversations get quite heated.

I've been quite shocked at times by their takes on the laws they are charged with enforcing and have concluded, even in my own family that they are guilty more often than not of enforcing what they think they know as the law until told otherwise by a judge. Bottom line is that in a sitation like that how you chose your words and being very knowledgeable yourself or to have an actual copy of the law with you to show the officer may be the difference between being handcuffed and carted off to jail, or losing the knife.

I think I will carry my AOs in my state and carry a regular or flipper model when I go out of state to be sure. I think the new RAM will be a favorite of mine when it comes out seeing as it was designed by the same person as my DOG that I like, the the blade is less that 3.5" for a good bet at being compliant. Maybe a 2.9" blade would be better for some areas though I do not know.

I find it funny that really my AO is slower to open due to the safety anyway!

As far as St Louis goes, my wife is not real comfortable with weapons and before this trip she asked if I was bringing something from my safe and I said yes. Then she asked if I was bringing a knife, and I said yes. She said "Good." That about floored me! First time she has ever asked and I guess it was St. Louis that made her ask. :D We had fun and will go back again, but I will again take my "things" as my wife calls them just to be sure.

EDIT - acourvil - It seems that AO is legal in Missouri from what I could find in the laws, but not legal at the arch which could just be a St. Louis law, or just the Federal land at the Archs law. We may never know.....
