So I just finished Red Dead Redemption 2...

Made it further than me. Great game but I probably made it 3/4 through before just giving up and never picking it up again...

That ending...you see it coming towards the end but man...

It did start dragging a little towards the end, but happy I finally found some time to finish it.

Nice work, partner. Currently on my 4th (5th?) playthrough while university stuff is creeping around the corner, lmao. This is one of those games that will age like wine.

I recently gave up on it shortly after Arthur got TB. I think it will age like milk. It was not fun. It was laborious. Why?

You are punished for not being a cold-blooded killer with a good heart. Is that even possible?

You can't have sex. Prostitutes ask you if you want some fun but you never do. Bath assistants never offer "happy ending".

You have to walk so damn slow in camp.

I don't care what my character wears but you "should" spend days and weeks hunting to get these outfits.

You only need 3-6 of the available foods/tonics. The rest just waste your time some more.

Horse physics are really bad.

Cooking meat is boring as hell. I must have spent a few hours grilling meat one piece at a time. Good times? NOT!

You kill a hundred people. The town should be empty except for those who fear you. You ride out of town and then back. People in town do not fear you. A thousand new idiots (who recognize you and supposedly know your "reputation") line up to be one of the next 1000 to die. Rinse and repeat.

Arthur gets raped and becomes more "woke" as a result. Rape is absolutely terrible. I never suspected I would be raped in a video game and I don't need Rockstar to simulate the experience for me to counteract my supposedly inborn "toxic masculinity".

etc. etc. etc.

The GTA games were way more fun for me. RDR2 is preachy as hell. I'm glad I waited to play RDR2 until I could get a used copy for $10. It is a beautiful world that is really annoying to spend time in.

Not a fan lol

I agree I think the flaws of the game are highted well by you.

I appreciate the effort the developers put in the game to make it immersive and "realistic". But at a certain point in games realism tends to backfire and make the game unfun/doubtful.

I agree, it's a preachy game. I think alot of games these days are, especially from Ubisoft. They try too hard to introduce their own values and belief into the game but none of it comes out subtle and ends up messing with the game. They say "play the game however you want! Freedom to choose your own path!" Sort of deal, but really there is one "right" way or "canon" way they try to push the player towards.

Metal gear solid games are always like this, lots of cool guns and gadgets etc, but if you want the best results (and do what snake does), you cant really kill anybody...

Thanks for sharing your thoughts and get my brain flowing as well!

Thanks for the oportunity to vent lol

I was half-way through a replay of the Deadspace trilogy when I grabbed rdr2. Deadspace 2, for example, is so much more fun to me. The lack of texture detail etc in good old games doesn't detract from the fun-factor. I like a good story, good gameplay, good voice acting. I think it was Halo 5, most recently, where I said to myself "wow is this voice acting ever bad". Its plot was inane as well. 343Industries mastered reverse-alchemy and turned gold into lead.

Another big turn-off in RDR2 was the wonky weapon selection system. I wanted to carry four guns at all times. Weapons seem to reset at odd times suprising you with no long-guns when you dismount etc. Also I got tired of picking up my hat. The hat-falling-from-head-during-scuffle mechanics failed to impress. Sometimes less is more.

I did enjoy tieing (bad) people up, riding them around and throwing them in the river or off a cliff etc but there goes your reputation, again. Then you have to listen to Arthur (yourself) whine, in a sea of self-doubt, to female friends back at camp. "Boo hoo. I'm so conflicted. Woe is me!". I wasn't at all conflicted. I killed everyone that needed killing and a few more because dead-eye is blood-splattering fun, robbing people is easy money and deadmen tell no tales. The Arthur I wanted to be wasn't in the script.

I didn't want to be the jovial, non-violent fellow I am in real life. I wanted to be the most feared outlaw ever and the scourge of all who might oppose me.

Lol no problem

I agree, after reach they were all downhill. Going to feel like call of duty soon.

The crime and karma system in rdr2 is horrendous and easily the worst thing in that game. One time I got held up by that wife and husband thief team up in the mountains, said screw you, pulled out my gun and shot them. Boom, low karma, I said okay whatever I'll just go release a few fish. Hey look some herbs let me go colle--- WANTED FOR MURDER wait wtf? Random NPC sees body and runs off to get the police...

Realistic? Sort of, I guess I would be the first suspect, annoying? Definitely.

I remember marston in rdr2 die after a few bullets but Arthur can literally be shot 10 times before dying lol.

Edit: sorry meant to say John dies quick in rdr1

Haven’t played Mass Effect yet. What’s the gameplay like? Is it fun?

I agree Witcher 3 is great. Resident Evil 4 is another single player classic.
Mass Effect is an action RPG with third person perspective. The main storyline is set in the future where humankind discovered interstellar travel technology, the plot revolves around Commander Sheppard, a combat veteran, who is selected to lead mixed crew of humans and various alien races, in a fight against ancient race of sentient machines called Reapers.
Phenomenal trilogy, great writing, and very immersive campaign. The only con is an outdated graphics. I am positively jealous that you can experience this incredible trilogy for the first time!!!

If I were to pick a few modern RPGs that everyone should give a shot at before they die:
- witcher series
- mass effect trilogy
- vampire the masquerade: bloodlines
- dragon's dogma (yes, this one)
- dragon age origins + awakening (new DAs suck)
A few more I cant think of...

There are a lot of old school ones I wont list. Honestly, too many good games, too many hours spent lol.

To the point of RDR2, I think its a SUPERB game and one of the more immersive games out there. I just think games that keep track of "stats", completion %, are artificially extending the game's length (when it really doesnt need to, it just makes the game un-immersive). I know there are kids out there who shot more accurately or ate more weed or whatever, I really don't care.

They just released (a month or so ago) the Mass Effect Legendary Edition that has all three games upgraded for current consoles and with all the DLC included for the price of one.

I never played the first game on 360 but just finished it from this bundle and the graphics, while perhaps not top of the line, looked pretty good to me.

Legendary Edition is a great deal! One thing that stops me from buying is missing remastered multiplayer from ME3! As soon as they will add it, I’ll buy it!!!

Thanks, I’ll check it out. Looks like it’s right up my alley since I love sci-fi. I might’ve seen a few trailers online of the recent games I think.

Speaking of classic trilogies, the Assassin’s Creed Ezio trilogy is also stellar. By today’s standards, the controls are kinda clunky and the graphics are outdated as well, but the story, pacing, and characters are all great.
