does 52100 HAVE to be forged? can you buy it precision ground and grind it? if so, do you not get all of the great properties or is it as good as if forged?

plus, for those of us who want to use some steels that we dont have the resources at home to heat treat, who does this as a service (and does it WELL)?

thanks

Sheffield has 52100 an it`s nice an clean, it`s
1/8"x 1 1/2" I think??? around $10.00 for 3ft.
Admiral Steel is saling it to now but I think
it`s much higher price. But don`t hold me to it

Ive tried the Shefield 52100 flat bar and didn't get the performance that I get from forged 52100. Thats not to say that it didn't perform well, it did. Whether the diferances come from forgeing or from steel melts I don't know.

I did try an experiment a while back where I ground a knife frome a bearing race(big hand grinder) and forged one from the same race and the forged one out cut the stock removal by about 30%.

That said, the 52100 stock removal would still make an excelent knife if heat treated right.

i was mainly asking because i wanted to know if stock removal from 52100 would really be that much better than 5160 or O1. from what ive read, forged is better than these other steels.

SkaerE,
I have started rolling out some 1 3/4" round bar into 52100 flat bar to resale. I also offer it precision ground for people that will do stock removal and don't have the resources to do all the forging. It isn't what I call an inexpensive steel but I think it is a great steel. It can be seen at my web site.
