I have been looking for a Bowie style knife, and the Cold Steel 1917, Buck 120 General, and Ontario SP-10 were brought up, and I may order the the Buck later. I decided to order the Aitor knife based on the fact that it had a good reputation. Any comments about the Oso Negro would be helpful.....seems like the saw on it, is more than just for show.

The oso negro has been going on since the 80's, issued to the Spanish army and later adopted by other armies around the world. Solid and beautiful knife, that saw makes very nice notches very quickly. Post pics and more important, use it! here's a shot of mine:

The saw is not for show. It's very useful for notching. I wouldn't use it for a saw unless I REALLY needed to saw something.

Seems a lot of saws are for show, I can notch alright with a USAF Ontario Pilots knife, but its really not made for that.

Wow! I really dig the sheath. Do you ever sharpen your saw? If so how do you do it, and what do you use. Also what kind of factory grind can I expect? How easy or hard are these knives to sharpen?

I don't sharpen the saw, but if I needed to I would use a tapered diamond hone. I made the sheath, the Oso is the one that sparked my interest in Spanish blades a long time ago although this one is a quite recent acquisition. Factory grind is hollow, but not too thin. As far as easy or hard to sharpen, these lean on the hard side, but not impossible.

Got mine in today. Handles well, seems to be a chopper. Out of the box it did alright with the paper test. The saw notches really well, the blade chopped and whittled wood pretty good, and did good on raw hide leather. I really like the light weight and feel of it, and the handle seems to be rather stout and the sheath is really cool and seems well constructed. I tried sharpening it a little bit, but I have never sharpened a blade this curvy before. I have a Smith's diamond sharpener with the coarse side, and fine side, several Arkansas stones and a work sharp. Not sure I want to put this curvy of a blade in a work sharp seems it would be cumbersome. Worker with it a little bit on a stone, but had trouble not with the angle but getting consistent around the curves. Any advice?

Oso Negro (black bear)
is the civilian version
of the Cuchillo de Monte.
as a knife,
it holds up in actual use.
but like most things,
there are limitations.
like, the amount of punishment
it can take.
just realize that it has a stick tang
holding up a wide tip blade.
also be wary of chinese copies.

Too small for me.

I have the bigger version:

The ultimate tacticooled and strengthened version:

And the original thing that started it all, one of these:
