I've been on the fence for some time and have been curious as to what has made so many ardent Emerson fans. To be honest, I've not really been impressed with the appearance of some of the knife designs. Mostly it was the blocky look of the grips that threw me off as well as chisel ground blades. I know, I know... but esthetics -and- functionality combined are what I gravitate towards.
After watching Nutnfancy's interview from 2012 SHOT show with Ernie Emerson, I decided to take a deeper look and possibly the plunge and pick up my first Emerson.
So after a little research, I picked up a new CQC 15 SF (looks like a fantastic all around blade design!!!) the other day and have been pretty impressed with it so far. Going to put it through the paces (mainly outdoor, camping, utility use) and will report on what I find.
Upon pulling it out of the box, it was pretty stiff, but it's beginning to break in. This seems to be the standard though from what I've read. Has a good feel in the hands. Love that blade and the fit and finish were decent too...
I immediately went and looked for threads on how others have replaced the thumb disk with a bullet casing. I spent the next hour or so digging though some of my brass looking for nickel pieces and then cutting, filing, and sanding the head of the casing. Investing this little bit of time and materials in the knife make me appreciate it that much more! Instant sentimental value... Going to make me a lanyard next.
At any rate, just wanted to show off a few pics...
