...and he sent me back a couple of resurrected beauties! Glenn is very talented dude.

Sorry, I don't have any "before" shots, but here's the molted shells Glenn returned with the knives...

And the back story...

This Laguiole Fontenille Pataud was originally a shadow pattern in ebony wood. One day I had the brilliant idea to cinch up a little blade wiggle with some vice grips and some not-so-gentle pressure. *CRACK!* And all of a sudden I found myself in need of an expert knife modder to put some new duds on my mangled knife. I've always been one to learn the hard way...:o Fortunately, I had been a longtime admirer of Glenn's work and decided to seek him out.

Meanwhile I picked up this barehead jack on the auction site stamped: "RUD. BUCHEL / MERSCHEID / SOLINGEN". Very awesome knife, super thin blade and snaps like a gator. But the covers of unknown wood were rotting and separating from the liners. Figured I'd see if Glenn could do something about that as well.

I wanted to keep the classy looks of the shadow pattern on the Laguiole, but desired a more durable (read: idiot tinkerer proof :D) material. We settled on ivory paper micarta.

For the jack I wanted to stick with wood and Glenn sent me a picture of what he had on hand. I let my girlfriend make the choice and she went with Brazilian Walnut.

After twiddling my thumbs for a couple months (with regular updates from Glenn!) here's what showed up on my doorstep...

I couldn't be happier with either. As many of you know, Glenn's quality of work is exceptional. I consider myself very lucky to have stumbled upon this corner of the internet where such wealth of information and skilled craftsmen can be found. Thanks again Glenn

WOW Jon - WOW Glenn!

Excellent work - they turned out so beautiful!!:thumbup::eek:

Like Primble said "Wow"
You have to watch out for that Glenn fella, you send him knives, but he pulls them all to bits!!!

Jon, you are too kind.

The Lag was fun and difficult to work on at the same time. The spring was already fileworked previously. I normally assemble my knives, then do all the hafting and finishing. This one I had to finish before assembly. I have a new respect for this pattern. The steel looks like it will perform well.

Here are some before and after pics...

Another great job by Glen, Super talented guy who is very easy to deal with. I am in line waiting for my next Glenbad mod now.....

That was some terrific work right there Glenn.....quite impressive recovery job on those two old beauties.

Good stuff!

Nice work Glenn.

The notch on the Lag where the back spring is showing.....would the knife function be jeopardized without it? I have never handled one of these.

Markesharp,
The notch on the Laguiole is where the bee sits. The bee is a symbol in French history.
A few fine French restaurants in America use fixed blade Laguioles, they make cutting a great steak even better.

Very nice work! The choice of materials on your two new knives fits them perfectly:thumbup:

:)

Thanks Tim. They are very cool looking knives.

Great stuff! Fontenille-Patauds are particularly well-made knives. The 'abeille'/ bee backspring is one single piece, not welded as is in cheaper Lags. Glenn has done a wonder with that micarta handle option = durable, beautiful and appropriate.

He's an artisan, I'm really pleased with the work he did for me.

Thanks, Will

Very nice and great work as always from Glennbad

Beautiful work. Just picked up a 12cm Forge de Laguiole in Black Horn while in Cannes, France. While always interested in the pattern I just never thought I'd want to carry one. But after handling them there, a combination of the desire for a souvenir and a great appreciation of the craftsmanship led me to pull the trigger. Glad I did.
