So I thought up an Idea...

I've been getting really interested in the idea of making a folder of my own, but since I'm so far gone for time, money, and equipment, I thought up something with a perhaps more satisfying result.

The root of my desire for my own custom knife was mainly one out of feel, looks (to a lesser extent), and just satisfaction of doing something on my own. Upon looking at alphaknifesupply and knifekits, I found most of my time spent looking at the pivots. This led me to conceive a much more do-able idea to meet most of these criteria.

What if I bought a production knife — a cheap one of course — and installed a new pivot, bushing, and bearing? A smooth action is really all I want to get, and if I end up spending 10 or so on the pivot, and 10 or 20 on the knife, I can have a 30 dollar knife with pro grade hardware.

It sounds great in theory, and I know it'll probably be off center/level/sized, and it'll probably just ruin a perfectly good knife, but who cares! I wanna do it anyway. Any thoughts, suggestions, or recommendations on my idea?

I'd like a flipper, and I'm really digging RJ Martin designs, like the kershaw chill. If anyone could think of a similar look/feel but better suited to my modding, please say so. The main problem with the chill comes from the g10 handles with metal liners, since all metal handles seem like they would lend themselves to modding much better.

In case anyone is curious on the process I have in mind, I picture it like this:
-Drill a .25" hole where the pivot goes,
-Insert bearing + pivot barrel
-Drill out liners/handle to fit ball bearing washers
-Grind bearing + pivot barrel to length, as to not affect distance between either handle scale and lack bar
-Flip blade out millions of time and be satisfied:D

Thoughts?

There are tools available to drill out liners to the proper specs to fit nested ball bearing washers, usaknifemaker has everything you need to do that. They also have different-sized pivots to do what you have in mind. The hard part is enlarging the pivot hole of the hardened blade and getting your tolerances accurate enough so everything lines up where you won't have any blade play and modify the lock geometry.

Start with something simpler like making your own scales or bending your own clips. I'm still trying to get the hang of doing stuff like that.

I'd buy from usaknifemaker if they had the washers I want, but I can only seem to find them at aks. No offense, but building scales/bending clips doesn't really satisfy my desire

I think what gooeytek was getting at was buy a couple of folder kits to learn how it all goes together properly and get the basic theories and concepts down before you dive into doing a mod... It's sound advice... and it's what I was doing before I decided that I wanted to go the fix blade route. After I get some of the trade down I'll be revisiting folders.

Building scales and bending clips just make the end product a bit more personalized.

Addendum: to answer your question, I think you've got a splendid idea. It's kind of like souping up your ride... but you should know this could be the start of an expensive habit. If you're like me you won't be very satisfied with what you "fixed" in a cheapy knife, you'll probably end up building your own ;)

Oh and also for about $10 more you can start with the a kit, put it together, pull it apart and then do your mods to it. Oh and don't be afraid of buying all your bits and pieces from different sources sometimes it works out better that way...

Thanks for the reply, hobbyist. I've looked at kits on knifekits, but they're not super appealing to me. I know that modding a production folder is more work than fixed blades, but I'm not really capable of grinding blades yet, so I figured this route would be a good learning experience. And since I'm 16 with no job, when I say I'm short on funds, I'm really REALLY short on funds. I will eventually make my own complete custom folder, but that'll come in time: when I have more money and more time. Can you think of any sub ten dollar knife that would lend itself to this modding well?
