and we were wiring a couple of barges together. Our wires are coiled and tied with twine. One of the deckhands takes out an orange knife with a shiny clip. He opened it and cut the twine and before he put it back in his pocket he showed everyone and said "This is a spyderco knife. the best knife you can buy. these are the s***!" It was an orange Rescue 79 mm and later I find out he has an orange 93 mm rescue which he said was pretty dull. I offered to sharpen them. The Rescue Jr. was easy, the Rescue not as bad as I thought it would be (it was ATS-55) and for the rest of the week we talked Spyderco.
He liked the Byrd Cara Cara Rescue I was carrying and after about 3 straight days of talking about Spyderco, and him finding out that Spyderco distributes Byrds he and 2 other crewmen want Byrd Cara Cara Rescues.
Most knives I see out there are cheap slash and dash Chinese clones and gas station knives so it is always nice to see a Spyderco, and without fail, all of the ones I have seen (Pacific SE, blue Rescue SE with the finger grooves in the blade, couple of Byrd Cara Caras) the owners talked about how Spyderco is the "best you can buy."
They are out there and in the hands of working people who use them hard. I plan on picking up a few Cara Cara Rescues for 4 of the guys I am close to (and hopefully a Sage II for me to test myself
) to give them a good knife and to get more Spyderco and Byrds into the hands of people who will put them through the paces. A little research of my own
