But I figured Gollnick is right about buying 'em in bulk...

Even after duties applied for crossing the border to me, I figure they average out to a little less than 50 cents per blade. Locally however, one can expect to pay about $1.40 per blade for DE's.

By comparison, what do the average, new-fangled cartridges run?

Where did you order from? When I ordered my IP Reds from West Coast Shaving I didn't get hit with any duties. Also we have two wet shaving stores here in Canada that could have met you blade selection Fendrihan and Rasage Poulin. You did by some of the more expensive blades out there though.

Don't forget italianbarber.com/, the home of RazoRock soaps!

I've never been to the Fendrihan and Italian Barber sites before... thanks for the links, gents!

I ended up going through West Coast Shaving for these blades, since they had the brands I was hankerin' to try in packs of 100, or 50 at least. Previously I was considering trying Derbys, but I've since read really mixed reviews on them. Some say they're consistent, others rank them pretty low on the ladder.

Just got 60 Feather delivered. This costs less than FIVE Mach3 blades here in the EU. It goes without saying performance is vastly superior from the DE.

QUESTION. On e-bay I've come across Black Feather. Are these some knock-off or a cheaper line, anybody???

The Feathers in the black label come 5 to a pack while the yellow label are 10 to a pack. According to Feather, the blades are identical.

The Feathers' reputation is well earned... I'm STILL on the first one since getting this shipment... I haven't touched any of the others yet. By about my 4th or 5th shave with the Feather, it gets reduced to about the sharpness of your average razor blade. :D This bulk-buy might last me longer than expected!

Feather suits me far better than anything else I've tried, so far...

That said, many people have other experiences or favourites.

Seemingly opposite end of the spectrum, I tried the Bic Chrome Platinums after the first feather. I don't know if this will be indicative of the rest of them, but the first Bic felt fairly rough, and it seemed all to easy to nick myself. Still got some healing up to do on the side of my head. The first few shaves I had tremendous difficulty getting my chin smooth. Strangely, the Bic seems to have improved a little after a couple shaves... but not by much. I will use these begrudgingly between better blades if this first one is any indicator.
Anyone else have an opinion on 'em?

Bic VARY a lot from my experience. They can be good but...in the end, why play Russian Roulette when Feather is so very reliable? True they cost a bit more but compare their cost with the outrageously expensive cartridge alternative. Bics nick, I'm not fond of this.

Had I known what I know now... but I'll confess that the primary reason I got the Bic was to that they appear to have the least waste produced in the packaging. I figured if they turn out to be decent blades, I could use something that will leave less clunky blade cases floating around in landfills. Even so, again, the average DE packaging is still more compact than the cartridge razors when it's time for the rubbish bin.

I've had good results with BIC. I like them. And I like their packaging.

I find them to be 90+% of Feather for 20% of the price

All I use is the Feathers, and I use a fresh one for every shave! I must have a pretty thick beard.

That or you are just filthy rich! A new Feather razor blade every day? Oh, the preposterous extravagance of it! Such absurd immoderation, such abject luxury, it's simething that only a tycoon would do. I've heard of how you elite live in Hong Kong, but this is just outrageous!

LOL. I shave every 4-5 days. Shaving every day would be very rough on my skin!

Has anyone else noticed that Feathers drop off drastically once they start to dull? I started to change mine every third shave once I realized the fourth or fifth shave it seemed to be getting a little rough. Since I've gone to switching blades every third shave, I've all but eliminated any irritation. I used to only get three or four shaves out of the expensive cartridges so it's more than worth it to ditch the blade after three shaves and not worry about it.

I think it has a lot to do with the storage conditions. if I clean and store any of my DE blades they last much longer than sitting in the razor on the counter. technique comes into play a lot. I find that I have no real need to do more than one pass with a feather, some multi-pass with a Bic, so is it "uses" or "mileage"? the feathers seem to last longer for me (if taken care of) Who knows.

I just about always get four perfect shaves from a Feather. All attempts to get a fifth even adequate shave have failed. I do find that Feather blades do fail dramatically.
